 Annexure F – Annexure C: Motor – List of Exotic Vehicles, Licence Code and Vehicle Code Classifications

  A motor vehicle, being:
(i) an articulated motor vehicle, of which the gross combination mass of the truck- tractor does not exceed 3 500 kg;
(ii) a combination of:
(a) a motor vehicle the GVM of which does not exceed 3 500 kg; or
(b) a mini-bus, bus or goods vehicle, the GVM of which does not exceed 3 500 kg.
  Includes authorisation to drive any motor vehicle for which a Code B driving licence is required.
   EC1
 A motor vehicle, being:
(i) an articulated motor vehicle, of which the gross combination mass of the truck- tractor exceeds 3 500 kg but does not exceed 16 000 kg;
(ii) a combination of:
(a) a motor vehicle the GVM of which exceeds 3 500 kg but does not exceed 16 000 kg; or
(b) a mini-bus, bus or goods vehicle, the GVM of which exceeds 3 500 kg but does not exceed 16 000 kg.
 Includes authorisation to drive any motor vehicle for which a Code B, C1 or EB driving licence is required.
 EC
   A motor vehicle, being:
(i) an articulated motor vehicle of which the gross combination mass of the truck- tractor exceeds 16 000 kg;
(ii) a combination of a bus or goods vehicle, the GVM of which exceeds 16 000 kg.
   Includes authorisation to drive any motor vehicle for which a Code B, C1, C, EB or EC1 driving licence is required.
     International/Foreign Driver’s Licence
     1. Amendment Regulation 110 of the National Road Traffic Act stipulates that a driving licence issued while the holder of it was not permanently or ordinarily resident in the Republic will, subject to the conditions under which it was issued be deemed to be a valid licence if:
1.1 it has been issued in an official language of the Republic; or
1.2 a certificate of authenticity or validity relating to the licence is issued in an official language of the Republic by a competent authority; or
1.3 a translation of that licence in such official language, is attached to it; and
1.4 such licence contains or has attached to it a photograph and signature of the licence holder.
 2. A foreign driver’s license (excluding a provisional (or learners) license) issued in a prescribed territory (the Southern African Development Community member states – SADC, including Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Tanzania) may drive a motor vehicle of the appropriate class for own use.
