Many of the innovative breakthroughs in healthcare that made headlines in 2014 were seminal discoveries in the mid-1990s.
For example, research conducted by Dr. James P. Allison in the 1990s
at the University of California, Berkley, led to the clinical development
of ipilimumab (Yervoy®), a cancer immunotherapy that has saved the lives of many late stage cancer patients. Allison’s research focused on activating the body’s immune system to fight cancer — a major shift from the conventional methods that often killed cancer and healthy cells as well. His innovative thinking shifted the paradigm of conventional cancer research, paving the way for others to look beyond the norm.
While breakthrough pharmaceuticals are now providing positive impacts on patients’ lives and health, other innovative discoveries reflect Allison’s paradigm-shifting style. Many of these discoveries may not have received the attention of breakthrough oncology pharmaceuticals, yet all will likely alter the course of healthcare, whether in the near or not too distant future.
