BRENT REHM D.A. DAVIDSON
Brent Rehm is a Senior Vice President, Branch Manager and Financial Consultant at D.A. Davidson. He grew up in Belgrade and Dillon, Montana, studied at Montana State University, and
has lived in Helena for the past 33 years, 31 of which have been spent working for D.A. Davidson. He is an artist whose eclectic portfolio spans a wide range of mediums, including pen and pencil, chalk pastels, and
a dabbling in oil. He has painted on antique jugs, saw blades, wood, canvas, tin, and makes his own wood frames.
Brent remembers that as a young child, he liked to draw. He elected to take art classes in high school, and continued to take drawing classes in
college. He
has developed his artistic abilities through the years using animals, sports, and people as his subjects, including some chalk portraits and oils in his high school years. It has always been a hobby, a creative outlet that he can lose himself in for hours at a time in his basement studio and workshop. Once he was out of college, Brent was able to devote a considerable amount of free time to pursuing his art as a hobby; later, for a time, he got away from art, but for the past ten years he has dedicated more time for art to resume its place in his life.
I meet Brent in his o ce at D.A. Davidson, and am greeted by three vivid and compelling Cuban men, each individually brought to life with chalk pastels in exquisite detail. Brent had been captivated with photographs he had seen of these men in a magazine, so he drew them. From behind me as
I sit across the desk from Brent, three pencil drawn people smile at me from atop their horses. One of them is Brent’s father, and he used a photograph as the inspiration
for the impressive piece. A pencil drawing of ve puppies that he drew for his wife occupies another wall. We venture into the hallway, where a large oil-painted bison keeps watch over the o ce. Brent painted this piece with two bison under a dramatic stormy sky, and fashioned the wood frame himself, in keeping with the company’s bison-themed logo. In a conference
room, the company’s founder and his son, brought to life with chalk pastels, gaze upon the room with pleasant smiles.
Brent has worked with all sorts
of mediums and surfaces. A few years ago he made and contributed painted tin sh ornaments to the annual Festival of Trees on behalf of the company. He has been commissioned to create larger painted tin sh, a shadowbox with sh, as well as a number of unique paintings on antique water jugs, galvanized metal containers, and even an old saw blade. He would like to try his hand at sculpting with clay and bronze someday.
Brent fondly recalls his high school art teacher, Darrell Johnson, who taught at Beaverhead County High School in Dillon. Mr. Johnson was a tremendous inspiration and throughout all four years of art class, taught him a great deal about chalk pastels, oil painting, portraits, and drawing with pencil. Some of Brent’s other inspiration comes from artist Dale Livesay, who paints large landscapes with oil, and Larry Zabel, who also uses oil to paint western themed pieces. ■
