Put Down The Rake
LAeave the Leaves Source: Leave the Leaves, University of Minnesota Extension
s the temperatures drop so do the red, yellow and orange foliage — covering our yards and blowing into any open crevice they can nd. To so many, raking and bag- ging leaves becomes another item on our Fall To Do List. But wait, don’t pick up the rake and bag quite yet. Leaving those leaves on your grass may be just what you need for a greener, weed-free turf next spring.
Research has proven that fall is the best time to invest in your turf grass to increase your chances of a healthier, greener turf come spring, and one of those investments includes fertilizing. But don’t think that the only source of fertilizer is from a bag. Those leaves covering your lawn are an excellent source of fertilizer — free fertilizer!
Once you get a fair amount of fallen leaves built up on your lawn (up to six inches) pull out your lawn mower and set the mowing deck to the highest setting. (This works best when there is a fair amount of morning dew on the leaves.) Using one or two passes, mow those leaves down so that they create a residue or mulch layer on the turf grass. After a few days this residue layer will seem to disappear because it will sift down into the turf. Depending on the volume of fallen leaves you get, you may need to complete this mowing technique a few times over the course of the fall season. You can also mulch the leaves and then collect them for use on other areas of your yard like garden beds or bare spots.
This practice of mulching leaves and leaving them on your turf can result in less
bagged fertilizer use
and fewer weeds
come spring.
