Cleaning Your Dog’s Teeth
by K-9 Smiles, Anesthesia-Free Teeth Cleaning for Dogs & Cats
We are asked all the time how often do I need to brush my dog’s teeth. The short answer is every single day. Anything less and your pet’s teeth will build upwithtartarwithinthe rst24hoursaftertheirdental. Theyarenodifferent than us as far as tartar build up and we brush our teeth twice per day.
Whenever possible start your young pup on having their mouth opened several times a day. Provide a reward for doing this, a small training treat and provide a phrase like- Let’s go brush your teeth.
If you have smaller dogs you may wish to wrap them in a soft towel and sit on the oor with them. Give them a small training treat as a reward for being a good dog.
Use an antibacterial canine tooth product designed for dogs. Purchase avored doggie toothpaste and allow them to taste it. There are so many wonderful products to choose from try to nd one with as many natural ingredients as possible.
We have many owners who tell us they use an electric tooth brush on their dogs, do whatever is easiest for you and your pet.
Remember you are trying to keep the lm of tartar from building up again, once it attaches to the tooth you must have it removed by scaling the tartar from the teeth.
First put some toothpaste on your nger and run your nger across the dog’s gums. The next time around, do this again but put the product on a soft toothbrush and run this around the dog’s mouth.

Try brushing often to get your pet use to it. You may only get a few teeth the rst few times but you want to make it a pleasant experience. Remember to reward them.
I personally use a small bathroom with the door shut, with the larger dogs I put their back to the tub and stand over them, lean the head back slightly and brush the insides and outsides.
