Mulching is an effective way to help overwintering plant and shrub roots retain moisture and minimizes exposure to weather extremes. Mulch now to water less later. Three inches of wood mulch without weed fabric beneath it is an ideal treatment for trees and shrubs. Applying tree wrap to the trunks of tender and young trees can help them better tolerate freeze and thaw cycles and prevent sunscald. Leave the tree wrap on until mid-April, when the sun is higher in the sky and leaves are beginning to appear.

Protecting plants, shrubs, and young or tender trees from extreme weather conditions can help them survive the winter and thrive in the upcoming growing season. Three things you can do to help your garden areas over the winter are to cut off and clear the area of diseased and dead foliage, check soil moisture, and mulch your plants.
