Jason Gray was elected Mayor of Castle Rock in 2018. Mayor Gray grew up in the state of Washington, but has called Castle Rock home for more than 20 years. He owns Crowfoot Valley Co ee and Crow Bar downtown, and a new location at Arapahoe Community College Sturm Collaboration Campus. Mayor Gray actively contributes to the vibrancy and the strategic planning for Castle Rock. In addition to being the Mayor of this great Town, his service includes  ve years on the Castle Rock Chamber of Commerce board; seven years on the Downtown Alliance board;  ve years as president of the Downtown Merchants Association; and  ve years on the Castle Rock Economic Partnership board. Mayor Gray enjoys writing, as half of the duo Harris Gray, with multiple published works. He also enjoys  shing, kayaking and  nishing behind his wife Kathryn in 5K and 10K races. His passions include spending time with family and organizing fundraising to support research into multiple sclerosis, ALS, Parkinson’s and dementia.
There was thought that maybe the plans to develop the building into the town’s arts center with the front restored to its original appearance while adding space to the back for a theatre, art gallery and class space may have kept the old hotel o  the list, since it was in less danger that other nominations to Preservation, Inc.
Rachel Parris, programs manager of Denver-based Colorado Preservation Inc., indicated that the competition was considerable---only about  ve sites are picked each year out of about 30 nominations.
The article said that renovation plans for the old hotel are on hold for now because the building owner, longtime Castle Rock resident and founder and president of White Construction Group, “got some resistance” when he approached town about the project. He said there was a reluctance to provide funding if there was any risk involved.
Edison said the historic preservation board plans to apply again to try to get the hotel on next year’s Preservation list and White said there are no plans to demolish the building, so the immediate future remains uncertain.
The property was designated as a Historic Landmark by the Castle
Rock Historic Perseveration Board in 1998, known as City Hotel 1874.
If only the walls of this old hotel could speak. . .
