ummingbirds in Castle Rock are many. To keep them coming to our
homes healthy and happy, do this: Nectar during normal season, April to
September, is made at 4 parts water and 1 part pure cane sugar. Feeders
should be changed every three days, unless it is hot, then every two days.
Old or moldy nectar can cause sickness. Never buy or put red dye in your
feeders. Clean your feeders with diluted vinegar and a brush and rinse
thoroughly. During migration, September to October 15, the ratio should be 3:1 to give them a bit more for their long journey far south. Their nutrition consists of nectar from owers, protein from bugs, and the nectar we provide in our feeders. To entice them to your yard, plant owers they love, especially red ones. Research carefully what feeders you use as some will make it easy for bees to accumulate which is not preferable. Hummingbirds migrate based on the length of day with mature ones leaving early, usually when nesting is complete. The immature ones typically leave last and are the ones who need the nectar left out until October 15. The nectar is also important for the migrating hummers

If an early cold front arrives before migration, it is important to put your feeders in a protected place and change the water every couple of hours to keep it from freezing.
