in Neglected Miniature Horses
Sixteen neglected miniature horses—including two babies—are receiving care at the Dumb Friends League Harmony Equine Center in Franktown, Colo. ey are among more than 80 miniature horses and ponies rescued by the Houston Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (HSPCA) in Texas.
e Dumb Friends League agreed to assist in providing care for these neglected horses to help the HSPCA make room for animals displaced by Hurricane Harvey. e miniature horses have been previously unhandled and, in addition to rehabilitation, will require extensive training. ey will eventually be available for adoption.
“We have strong partnerships with animal welfare organizations across the country,” said Bob Rohde, Dumb Friends League CEO. “When we have the capacity and resources to assist our partners, we do whatever we can to help animals in need.”
e miniature horses and ponies arrived at the HSPCA in mid- August su ering from a variety of medical conditions including malnutrition, breathing issues and hoof problems.
“ e Houston SPCA has already been providing critical care to these animals,” said Rohde. “We will continue the progress the HSPCA has made in helping them become healthy, adoptable horses.”

e Dumb friends League Harmony equine Center is a private rehabilitation and adoption facility for horses, ponies, donkeys and mules that have been removed from owners’ care by law enforcement authorities. It also serves as a centralized hub where horses from humane societies and rescue groups in the Midwest and southwestern United States can receive training and re-homing. It is one of only a handful of facilities of its kind in the nation.
