My Emergency N e s t
One of the most important considerations to a prudent planning process is the decision on how much money a family should save for a “rainy day”. Cash that is subjected to zero risk and accumulated prior to beginning an investment plan. I can remember an early family nancial learning experience. My mother had four distinct envelopes, weekly expenses (including mortgage), vacation fund, education savings, and family emergency spending account. The most important envelope was for life’s unexpected events, the “emergency fund.” And life indeed happens, and this account was certainly active throughout my childhood.

When deciding on your amount, important considerations are:
• Average monthly family expenses;
• Current job security;
• A thoughtful estimate of how long it may potentially take to
replace family income;
• Available support from family;
• Any planned, out of ordinary expense (new roof, semester abroad, new car, etc.).
