and obscuring your perspective on the situation. If there is one thing we all know about parenting, it is that sometimes we shouldn’t be doing it alone; sometimes, we need to add people - carefully and intentionally - to our village.
It is better to err on the side of caution and open the door wide for any mental health help. It is much easier to address an unhealthy relationship with food with a 12 year old, for example, than offer solutions to an 18 year old who has battled bulimia for six years.
This is not easy. It might honestly trigger some personal trauma for you, or create conversations you never wanted to participate in. Sometimes, this is the point at which the parent realizes they, too, could benefit from a professional. But modeling an attitude accepting of help can work wonders - it gives your teen the freedom from perfectionism and proof your love isn’t performance-based. In helping your kid, maybe you’ll help you.
If you or your teen need to talk to a mental health professional, our team of counselors Authentic Connections Counseling Center would be happy to help. We value finding the right fit for you or your teen. Call our intake coordinator at 720-370- 3010 x100 to figure out which counselor is right for you.
