t is best to purchase bulbs in early September for the best selection and variety. Check the size and condition of each bulb. Since there is a direct correlation between the size of the bulb and the ower size, always choose the largest bulbs of each variety. Avoid any that show signs of mold or mechanical damage. A bulb should be plump, rm and heavy for its size. To create beautiful visual display, select various bulbs with a variety of owering times to lengthen the bloom time in your garden. It is possible to have a fantastic bloom display from early March through early June with some careful planning!

Site Selection
The selected site should have adequate sunlight to regenerate strong bulbs for the next year, be well drained so the bulbs will not become waterlogged, and show the owers off to their best advantage.
Planting Bulbs
Late September is the best time to plant bulbs so they root well be- fore the ground freezes. Bulbs planted after October may not have time to root adequately and may not ower uniformly in the spring. Bulbs are planted deeply, usually three to four times the diameter of the bulb. This measurement is between the soil surface and the tip of the bulb. Make sure to plant the bulbs with the growing tip up. Cover the bed with a three-inch layer mulch to prevent alternate freezing and thawing that could break roots and damage bulbs. It is a good idea to add a general-purpose inorganic fertilizer, such as 5-10-5 to provide additional nutritional bulb needs. After the plants bloom in the spring, let the foliage die down naturally. The foliage provides energy to the bulb for the next season’s bloom.
