MUSIC IN CASTLE ROCK
Last month Tom wrote about mixers and their key roll in producing the live music you hear at a venue.
Here’s a little more on how they t into the puzzle:
The mixer must be of good quality (and adequate size). Obviously the same is true of the musicians’ tools. (drum kits, guitars, basses, keyboards,
ampli ers, vocal microphones and
support gear).
Like musicians, some sound engineers are really good and a lot – not so much.
The very best (and more expensive)
instrument will add nothing - to very
little, to a working musician’s performance. Likewise the best, most advanced mixer will do little for a sound guy’s mix.
What makes a sound tech good is their ‘ear’.(We
all hear the music differently) Many bands will hire
a good sound guy who works well with their band and has an ‘ear’ to produce their sound in the best way possible. All things being equal, a great sound tech actually becomes part of the band. Look for the difference, the next time you attend a live music show.

It’s All About MUSIC
We Are Music
Technology in Music
We all recognize the band members and the instruments they play while we’re watching live music.
We notice some effects, like reverb and echo and we’ve all watched the guitarist add effects and change their sounds using their pedal board. We’ve seen wireless guitar to amp connections, and if we’re paying close attention we’ve seen the sound tech walking around, making adjustments to the mix on a tablet or smart phone.
Other tech devices typically rattle a live music purist.
These would include: loop stations (allow the player to record tracks and play along with them); drum machines (drums added electronically) and
vocal possessors. The vocal processor, controlled by the user, can add reverb, echo and other vocal effects. They are also used to correct pitch errors to bring a bad vocal more in line.
