Building Culture Through Art
and Education Many Americans today have no idea what the (WPA), Works Progress Administration program
was, let alone try to understand what it represented to the fundamental development and sustainability of our Nation’s history. Weaved into the fabric and foundation of our societal and labor struggles and triumphs, its rich foundation brought working-class people, starving artists, and creative geniuses together in an effort to combat the problems we faced on the footsteps of the Great Depression.
According to the Department of Interior:
“President Franklin D. Roosevelt put in place a series of government funded programs called the New Deal. The New Deal had three main goals: relief, reform, and recovery. To provide relief for

The WPA was responsible for employing millions of workers in building and constructing infrastructure, parks and recreation facilities, and public buildings across the country. The WPA also employed artists, writers, actors, and musicians under the Federal Art Project (FAP) to provide the public access to the arts and humanities. While the WPA provided much needed jobs to Americans out of work, it also provided numerous communities with state and local projects designed to benefit the public for generations to come.”

the same level of assurances needed to prevent the country from falling into another Great Depression. We can gain a lot from our history—if we just bother to take the time to learn from it.
On loan from the Northeast Oakland Historical Society and Museum, Barbara Benetti’s WPA inspired murals depicting ‘Old Oxford’ will be on display for a limited engagement at the Oxford Public Library. In partnership with the Northeast Oakland Historical Society and Museum, we are pleased to welcome the family of
Ms. Benetti, as we honor her contributions to the local art scene and remind ourselves of bygone days of early Oxford and the significant contribution artists like she made to the WPA movement here in Michigan.
The collaborative relationship between the Library and the Museum has become an invaluable recipe to further the cause of community engagement, educational enrichment, cultural and historical preservation and awareness. At OPL we are very pleased that the Museum and its Board of Directors has welcomed
the concept of sharing resources for the benefit and prosperity of the people and families who call Oxford home. We are honored to play a role in raising community awareness to new levels of historical, educational and cultural experiences. We could not do what we do without the on-going support and commitment of the Museum as a community partner. Together we are making a difference one artifact and one story at a time—there is no doubt about that.
