It was just a few months ago, however, that Jack%u2019s disenchantment with his job as a graphic designer for an advertising firm took hold and Roz voiced her long held dream to open a shop.OLD ACQUAINTANCE is a period room setting itself, carpeted and intimate with antique furniture, romantic mirrors and watercolor costume prints and arrangements of peacock feathers, plants and draped embroidered shawls. In this Victorian setting, printed silk scarves of the 30%u2019s and 40's, silkscreen kimonos, Hawaiian print shirts for men and a steamer trunk full of patchwork quilts yie for the browser%u2019s attention.Racks lining the shop hold dresses in silk, crepe, chiffon and velvet, reindeer sweaters, capes and antique furs. Jack and Roz both do the buying for the shop, combing the City for those special, unusual items that have become their trademark - such as a white satin 30%u2019s wedding gown tucked and buttoned with mind boggling complexity or amagenta velvet Scarlet O%u2019Hara number with the original hoop.Jack%u2019s special interest is Art Deco and OLD ACQUAINTANCE features a handsome collection of celluloid jewelry and French enameled cigarette cases from that period. Roz is a Nouveau fan with a personal wardrobe of velvet gowns that would do any Turn of the Century lady proud. Her prize possession, however, is of another era - the red dress that Natalie Wood wore in %u201c Splendor in the Grass.\if she is often tempted to keep many of the goodies she finds for herself, Roz says \of the fun of the shop is passing on to customers fantastic items that really delight them. It%u2019s like theatre, watching people slip into different periods and attitudes. One minute, a slinky Jean Harlow emerges from the dressing room in a satin slip dress- the next moment an imperious Bette Davis.%u201dShopping at OLD ACQUAINTANCE is like visiting an old friend. There are lots of memories and lots of dreams waiting in the shop at 217 Garfield Place, Park Slope.
