It is a success sometimes blownup in newsprint for the world to see, but moreoften to quietly blossom over time. Astranger who talks a jumper off the BrooklynBridge; an emergency medical technicianwho holds the hand of the wounded on theway to the hospital, a little league coach wholistens away the problems of his players areall heroes %u2014 some unsung %u2014 as their livestouch, mold or save those of others. On October 20, Brooklyn Borough President Howard Golden and the New YorkTelephone Company honored 19 such heroes%u2014 all members of the borough%u2019s uniformedservices %u2014 for outstanding leadership, superior individual effort and communityservice. Golden handed dut the awards withDennison D. Harrield and Robert E . Baileyof the Telephone Company at a ceremony inthe Klitgord Auditorium at New York CityTechnical College.Three of the recipients in fact were singledout for their response to the shooting ram %u00adpage at New York City Technical College inDowntown Brooklyn that left one dead andfour others injured. Sergeant Richard Ruberto of the 84th Precinct was cited for hisheroism in disarming the student who did theshootings. From only 30 feet away SergeantRubert convinced the gunman %u2014 still holdingtwo guns at the time %u2014 to surrender. Rubertojoined the NYC Police Department in 1981,and is m arried with a Vh year old daughter. In addition, Em ergency Medical Technicians Georgette Romagnano and CathleenSchonhans were honored for aiding thewounded during the shooting spree.%u201cWith complete disregard for their safety, they made their way through the battle zone !to treat the wounded %u2014 staying there untilpolice had secured the area and the victimscould be taken to the hospital,%u201d reads thecitation. The 19 honorees were from several different City departments, some with dram aticachievements, others with years of dedicatedservice. Jerry Greene, community relationsofficer for the Brooklyn House of Detention,is a frequent speaker at schools and com ;munity meetings throughout the borough, teaching kids about prisons, and has alsodonated his time to coaching football atThomas Jefferson High and Canarsie High.Darryl Harris has been a corrections officerfor only three years, but aided a fellow officerwho was knocked unconscious during an incident at the Brooklyn Correctional Facility. When the officer was knocked unconscious, kicked by inmates, H arris shielded the victim%u2019s body and took the blows himself untilhelp cam e.Sanitation workers Anthony Cantanzaritiand Joseph Falcone were driving theirsanitation route in Park Slope in July whenthey observed a woman running out of thesubway station in hot pursuit of three menshe said had mugged her. The sanitation mengave chase and finally caught up with one ofdie suspects, holding him until the police arrived.. _Port Authority Detective Sergeant Kenneth Campbell was cited for his leadership incoordinating and executing security on theBrooklyn piers during the recent Statue ofLiberty Centennial Celebration. A 25-yearveteran of the force, his citation states: %u201cAtgreat personal sacrifice he spent many months preparing for the event in order to ensure------L i : _ ____ 0 . a %u2022%u00abp u u u t o cuebjr.Captain Charles F . In 13 years withthe criminal justice system he has risenthrough the ranks to become Assistant Deputy Chief Court Officer. He is active in thePTA, Little League and his local chapter ofthe American Disabled Veterans in his hometown on Long Island. Some of the acts of heroism cited are trulythe stuff of thriller movies. Senior Court Officer Amedeo R. Stefanelli prevented adistraught fellow officer from shootinghimself in the head by grabbing the gun andplacing his thumb between the firing pin andbullet. During the ensuing struggle, OfficerStefanelli managed to wrest the gun away.Dennis Peay, J r ., a driver for the U.S. PostOffice, saved the lives of several people involved in a ca r accident in August. He pulledtwo unconscious passengers out of the carand administered CPR, then freed the driverwho was pinned behind the steering wheel. When police arrived, Peay left without givinghis name to police and was found onlythrough a witness who saw the act of heroismtranspire.Other honorees included: Police OfficerRichard Harker of the 77th Precinct for hishelp in fingering the alleged Spidermanrapist; Police Officer Frank Hartung of the90th Precinct in Williamsburg for his work inmediating problems in the Hasidic community ; Lieutenant Thomas J .
