In September, the project organizers apEroached Community Board Six to ask theoard to sponsor a forum on formalizing relations between Brooklyn and the Nicaraguancity, but were turned away because the boardmembers did not feel it was ar. appropriateissue for the board to consider.The Sister City Project said they wouldorganize their own forum and are askinganyone to come and present their views onthe issue. For more information, call 636-1901.Locals Help The HomelessAn Oct. 23 meeting in Downtown Brooklyndrew approximately 100 people to form acoalition of businesses, not-for-profit sector,churches, synagogues and concernedresidents to talk about ways to take care ofthe homeless of the community.%u201c As a direct result of the meeting,%u201d saysHeights Councilman Abe Gerges, one of theorganizers, %u201cthree committees were set up.One will seek volunteers for shelter work;another will seek appropriate locations; andthe third will deal with the overall dynamicsand special needs of the homeless.%u201dGerges said, %u201cI am pleased to say that contrary to the myth that people do not want toaccept homeless in the area, this wellattended meeting proves that the communityis very concerned with the serious problemsof the homeless. Also, instead of sending thehomeless into another area, every community can icon upon this joint project as a model of one community%u2019s efforts to care for itsown. I think and hope that together we canhave a significant impact upon the homelesscrisis in our City.%u201dCo-sponsors of the meeting included:HOME of Catholic Charities, The Partnership For The Homeless and CommunityBoard. #2.Black Committee Aids EllisThe National Park Service and Brooklynbased Caribbean/American Media Studies,Inc. jointly announced the formati n of acommittee comprising of Black Americancitizens to aid in the establishment anddesign of the Ellis Island National Museum,Oct. 20.The committee has two functions: it willadvise the Park Service of aspects relating toBlacks in the arrangement and display of thepermanent exhibits and it will stage specialexhibits.During the period 1890 to 1930, more than300,000 Blacks immigrated to the UnitedStates, half of which passed through EllisIsland. The Park Service says the committeewill also feature prominently those Blackswho arrived involuntarily in the UnitedStates as slaves.Canvass Raises Health FundsA door-to-door fundraising canvass in ParkSlope on Oct. 18 raised $1854 for a healthcenter in San Juan de Rio Coco, the town inNicaragua that area residents are seeking tomake a %u201csister city%u201d to Brooklyn%u2019s Community Board Six area. A mailing to 200 moreBrooklynites garnered an additional $490.Organizers say the money will go to a clinicthat serves 17,000 Nicaraguans but provideslittle more than first aid. According to formerBrooklyn residents Sarah Stookey, who nowlives and works in Nicaragua, and is the contact for the Brooklyn Sister City Project, ii) arecent survey by San Juan de Rio Coco officials, local residents said that expandinghealth care services is their No. 1 priority.They would like to add an emergency roomand pediatric care room to the clinic in thenear future.The fundraising, organized by theBrooklyn Sister City Project, was carried outby 22 canvassers who collected the moneyover four hours while contacting some 600residents of the area from Carroll to 10thStreets and Fifth Avenue to the Park. Donations ranged from $1 to $50. F or more information, call 852-3179 evenings.Shoreline Funds ReceivedU.S. Senator Daniel Moynihan and WestBrooklyn Congressmember Steve Solarz, have announced a $22.5 million project for thereconstruction of a large portion ofBrooklyn%u2019s shoreline on Coney Island.The project was introduced as an amendment to the Omnibus Water Projects billpassed by Congress last month.
