With about 80 percent of the vote tabulated, his staff declared that he was winning with a whopping 62.2 percent of the votes. Green himself remained at home while the tallies were being taken and arrived at his victory celebration at about 10:30pm. Walking into the room with his son Khalid at his side, Green hugged every well-wisher in sight on his way to the podium to address the assembled. In his acceptance speech, Green again chose not to criticize Frere and despite the large vote refused to claim he had been given a mandate as politicians often choose to do on the heels of such a lopsided win.%u201cIt represents a mission,%u201d Green told his supporters. %u201cThis election will have failed if we don%u2019t capture the momentum that we have here and help our children.%u201d He spoke very briefly and did not dwell on the recent campaign. Green said it was behind him and he wanted to go back to Albany and %u201cfinish the unfinished work.%u201dBut despite this almost nonchalant attitude, the swell of support in the room this election evening was indicative of new-foundB ay R id g e C ity C o u n c ilm e m b e r S alA lb a n e s e (R) m a d e a c a m p a ig n s to p fo r Ft.G re e n e A s s e m b ly m e m b e r R o g er G re e n atth e G o w a n u s S e n io r C itiz e n s C e n te r one le c tio n day. Aside from Frere, who says he will run against Green next year, the hint of upcoming opposition to Green over the months to come is likely to remain stilled, based on the results of the election. With the range of help from outside his district that was willing to come to his aid this year, Green has surely solidified his position as the 57th A.D. Assemblymember in as permanent a fashion as is ever possible in politics.Slope/Ridge StateSenate Seat GoesAgain To MegaBY ROB TAYLOROfficially, Joe Montalto, the Democratic challenger in the Slope/Bay Ridge State Senate race against Chris Mega, the GOP incumbent, has not conceded defeat since last week%u2019s general election because he impounded the polling booths and requested an official review of the vote.Unofficially, however, Montalto, who held the seat briefly from 1982 to 1984, lost to Mega for the second time in a battle that has been waged for the last three State Senate election years. With returns now showing Mega with roughly a 1,600 vote lead, 26,340 to 24,755, the three-term State Senator is making plans to return to Albany. While Montalto narrowed the lead Mega had in 1984 when he was returned to the State Senate with a 4,828 vote margin, Montalto had hoped to ride back to office on the coattails of Governor Cuomo%u2019s victory in this year%u2019s election.%u201c I will credit this year to Cuomo%u2019s place on the top of the ballot,%u201d says Mega, %u201cand I think he gave Montalto a lot of votes. But, I also think Montalto ran such a negative campaign against me that it backfired.%u201dNEGATIVE CAMPAIGN WAGED Whether the negative campaign worked against Montalto is difficult to judge. But, the effect of Governor Cuomo%u2019s coattails on the Democratic ticket shows that Montalto did do considerably better when Cuomo was on the ballot than when he was off. Both times the Governor has ran in a state-wide race, theContinued on Page 9JUNIOR TENNIS CLINIC SUMMER 86 AT BROOKLYN HOSPITAL TENNIS 240 WiHoughpy St (Dei Ashland & DeKalb Ave ): Beginners %u2022 Inle'mediate %u2022 Advanced %u2022 Boys and girls, ages 6-18 Session II August 7-Septembe' 12 1986 Thursday & Friday 1-3 or 4-6. p.m .$150 00 per session Partial financial aid available One session videotaped FURTHER INFORMATION (718) 624-5461 INSTRUCTORS MELSWANSON.
