(Phoenix/Koch Photo)Continuedcampaign in the 23rd Senate District came down to the wire.In 1982, Montalto won the race with 296 votes. Last week, there was a period during the vote tabulations that he was reported to be within 300 votes of winning the seat. Montalto%u2019s stake on Cuomo may not have been far off the mark. Unfortunately, for the Democratic challenger, the Governor chose to avoid any heavy campaigning for Democratic candidates in the GOPcontrolled State Senate until the last minute when he made a trip to the 23rd SenateFOR RESULTS OF ALLDOWNTOWN AREARACES, SEE PAGE 35District and campaigned for Montalto and Peter Abate, the Democratic candidate in the 49th Assembly District in Bensonhurst.Cuomo%u2019s campaign stop undoubtedly helped in the Bensonhurst and Borough Park neighborhoods that Montalto had targeted as areas with a large swing vote in the Senate District. Abate managed to defeat the GOP incumbent from Bensonhurst, Amaldo Ferraro, 9,835 to 7,288, showing that the neighborhoods indeed did swing fairly wide between GOP and Democratic candidates in that neighborhood. But the Democrats%u2019 luck in Bensonhurst and Borough Park did not swing over to conservative Bay Ridge, where the bulk of the 23rd Senate District lies. The community is Mega%u2019s home turf and has proved to be loyal to toe GOP State Senator even when he lost the seat to Montalto in 1982.This year, Montalto was not able to make a dent in the Bay Ridge election districts and Mega aids say that the State Senator took about 60 percent of the vote in the neighborhood. Despite a largely Democraticregistered constituency in Bay Ridge, even Governor Cuomo%u2019s presence on the ballot did not seem to switch many Senate votes. While Governor Cuomo was re-elected from toe Assembly Districts that converge on toe 23rd S.D., by a near 3 to 1 margin, the voters did not seem to turn against Mega in the expected numbers.U.S. SENATE IS TELLINGEven more telling in this race were toe returns in toe Assembly Districts within the 23 S.D. in the race for U.S. Senate between GOP incumbent A1D%u2019Amato and Democraticchallenger Mark Green. Despite the fact that Green carried Brooklyn in the final results, the Bensonhurst, Borough Park, Bay Ridge and Sunset Park neighborhoods all overwhelmingly voted for D%u2019Amato, proving an independence that even Montalto could not seek to change.%u201cBay Ridge is a tough nut to crack and we haven%u2019t done it yet,%u201d said Montalto on toe night of toe election. %u201cBut, we have shown the Republicans that they can%u2019t take us for granted. No matter what happens, we%u2019ve proven that to everybody.%u201dWhile the polling booths have been impounded, there is little doubt that Mega won the election. Montalto, after a long and hard campaign, left for a vacation following the defeat and could not be reached for comment. He has not ruled out another bid for toe seat in 1988, but after spending what he estimates as about $225,000 this year, he might think twice about running, especially as it will be a Presidential election year.Mega says he does not expect to see his opponent back next time. As is Mega%u2019s custom, he describes toe race like it is a boxing match. %u201cIt%u2019s not like Rocky III coming back for another round,%u201d he says. %u201cHe doesn%u2019t have to run again.%u201dWinner For The Day...For a brief moment Nov. 7, Joe Montalto, the Democratic candidate for State Senate in the Slope/Bay Ridge 23rd Senate District, thought he had won last week%u2019s general election over his GOP foe, Chris Mega.At about noon on Friday, Montalto%u2019s campaign office received a phone call from the Board of Elections, saying that the final tallies indicated Montalto had won the race by about 400 votes. Montalto%u2019s staff was skeptical of the announcement and said they did not take it seriously until they had official confirmation because their own numbers did not confirm that outcome.About two hours later, the Board of Elections called back and said they had made a mistake in counting the votes from the 52nd Assembly District and that the returns showed Montalto losing by about 1,500 votes. Needless to say, there was a short amount of euphoria at Montalto%u2019s campaign headquarters. %u201cHow many times do you lose a race and find out three days later that you might have won,%u201d said Bill Russo, a Montalto volunteer. %u2014 R.T.The Democratic challenger for State Senate, Joe M ontalto (left), was not about toacknowledge defeat to the Republicans on election night, so he asked to have votingmachines impounded for an official re-count by the Board of Elections.
