Its size, the quality of its artworks, or the diversity of its exhibits, or all three? New York City, being the long-acknowledged art capital of the world, has a plethora of museums, from the mighty Metropolitan and the bountiful Brooklyn, to mini-treasures, such as the Museum of American Folk Art and the Museum of the Borough of Brooklyn. This year-old gallery, nestled on the second floor of Brooklyn College%u2019s Boylan Hall, reflects the neo-Georgian style of the college campus, built in the 1930%u2019s. Its current exhibition, %u201cTides of Immigration,%u201d presents 92 pieces %u2014 mostly oils %u2014 depicting the immigrant experience. Mixed in with the paintings are photographs, drawings, a few cartoons and one sculpture. The artists represented are the %u201cWho%u2019s Who\the American art scene from the 1880%u2019s to the 1960%u2019s.From Joseph Keppler%u2019s romantic-styled lithograph entitled %u201cWelcome to All, April 28,1880,%u201d showing two goddesses welcoming us to the Statue of Liberty, to the realistic collage %u201cThe Street,%u201d by Romare Bearden, the whole spectrum of the immigrants%u2019 experience is catalogued. Most impressive among the paintings is the beautiful watercolor, %u201cDowntown New York,%u201d by John Marin, and %u201cEfzenka the Czech,%u201d by John Sloan. Berenice Abbott%u2019s %u201cSnuff Shop%u201d and Arthur Fellig%u2019s %u201cRabbi in the Window%u201d represent the best in photographic realism from 1930%u2019s-1940%u2019s period.Besides these well-known artists it%u2019s refreshing that the curators were considerate to introduce us to little known, but equally talented others. Among these are: Theresa Bernstein%u2019s %u201cThe Shopper,%u201d Ellen Bernard Thompson Pyle%u2019s %u201cThe Immigrants,%u201d and Martha Walter%u2019s %u201cWaiting To be Taken to New York, New York, Room 1922.%u201dIn a more whimsical tone there%u2019s Saul Steinberg%u2019s famous watercolor, %u201cNew York Skyline,%u201d and Wendell Macrae%u2019s highly amusing photograph %u201cRCA Building on its Elbow.%u201dDirector Shelly Mehlman Denhofer and her crew should be congratulated, not only for assembling this varied exhibition, but also for establishing this museum. The whole Flatbush, Canarsie and east Brooklyn area should be gratified to have this gallery in their backyard.%u201cTides of Immigration%u201d runs through December 2. The Museum of the Borough of Brooklyn is located at Bedford Ave. and Ave. H, room 2147. Admission is free. The Museum is open Monday, Wednesday and %u2019Thursday, 10am-5pm, Tuesday, 10am8pm and Friday-Sunday, 12noon-4pm. The complete series of exquisite woodblock prints, crafted during the 1850s as the artist%u2019s last great statement, will be exhibited in five stages, following the seasons. Next September, the entire 118 prints will go on display. The prints depict everyday life in Edo, the long-tranquil wooden city that now lies in ashes beneath modern-day Tokyo. According to the Museum%u2019s Associate Curator of Oriental Art, Amy G. Poster, who helped recover the prints from obscurity, %u201cBright and even harsh colors were intended by Hiroshige. Ours are in exceptional condition. The colors are brilliant, dark and very clear. Also, special techniques were used to enhance the luxurious quality of the series, such as embossing and adding gold and mica.%u201dP & R T Y W A R E !Choose from a beautiful selection ofpaper and plastic plates with matching cups, napkins, and table cloths, plastic cutlery, party favors andmoreAT WHOLESALE PRICES----- Visit The Warehouse AtBROADWAY SUPPLY COMPANY15 Cadman Plaza West (Old Fulton St.)(between Front & Water Streets, Brooklyn)TH 5-1707Mon. thru Fri., 12-5 pmCUSTOM FRAMINGFACTORY OUTLETSAVE 5SS and TIME%u2022 H undreds of styles%u2022 Top quality m etal and wooden fram es%u2022 All work done on prem ises by professionals%u2022 Readym ade stock sizes also availableDURAFRAMES, INC.M anu facturers of Fine Picture Fram es & MouldingsSPECIALTY CUSTOM FRAMING104 4th Ave , Boerum Hill, Bklyn, NY 1 1 2 1 7 (at W arren St.)Mon-Fn 8 5 30pm, Sal 8 4 30pm522-2320LEVOLORVERTICALB LIN D S50%O FFikraftIn Park Slope145 7th Ave.Bklyn.
