At least two people who did, and many more who probably did as well, were at the college Friday night, Nov. 7, for the basketball team%u2019s annual Red and Blue intersquad game.I am one of the people who knew, as I am proud to be in my third year as the 13th head basketball coach in that long rich tradition. Another who knew is Joseph Liantnio, a gentleman who attended the college in the mid-1930%u2019s and has been regularly attending St. Francis games since 1934! I know that, because in introducing him to our players at the reception that followed the game, I mentioned that Liantnio had been coming to games since 1930. With a quick and warm smile, he gently corrected me. %u201c 1934,%u201d he said, and our players enjoyed hearing about as much of those 52 years as he cared to tell! It was really an inspiration for our players to meet Liantnio, who is as kind a gentleman as he is dedicated to St. Francis Basketball. The scrimmage itself was hard-played, and our team looked relatively good considering it is still very early in the season. (Our first actual game is not until November 29.) In addition, it is a young team with 10 of the 13 members either freshmen or sophomores. Nevertheless, the alumni and guests present seemed pleased and enthusiastic about the year ahead.%u201cThese kids would have beat us by 30 points,%u201d graciously said Clifford Reddey, speaking of his team of 25 years ago. %u201cThey are so much bigger, stronger, and they alliumn so wpII. t.hev would inst po nvpr us.%u201dWhile there is no doubt that today%u2019s player is bigger and more athletically gifted than his counterpart of 25 years ago, chemistry professor and St. Francis alumnus Dr. Tom Quigley remembers those Terrier teams ofthe 1950%u2019s and 60%u2019s as %u201cglory days%u201d for St. Francis Basketball. %u201cWe sent three teams to the NIT in the 50%u2019s and 60%u2019s,%u201d Dr. Quigley explains, %u201cone of which went to the Semifinals. We always got great support, with some really oustanding players, and of course a great coach in Danny Lynch.%u201dIn addition to the simple fact that today%u2019s players are physically more gifted than their predecessors, today%u2019s St. Francis team, much like the college itself, is more diversified. While there are still many fine players on the roster from the New York high schools, both Public and Catholic, we have expanded our recruiting base to many other places as well, such as with this year%u2019s team, which includes players from Chicago, Delaware, Virginia, Pittsburgh, and Binghampton. The alumni were impressed with the %u201ckiddie corps.%u201d%u201cReally, if you had just walked in off the street you would not guess that some of the first year players were only freshmen based on how they were playing,%u201d said alumnus Dan Barry.Dennis McDermott, who is the college%u2019s all-time leading scorer and a player considered by many to the best ever to wear the Terrier uniform, agrees that the %u201cfuture is now.%u201d McDermott is serving on the Red and Blue Club%u2019s Board of Directors, and is helping rekindle the interest among the college alumni. %u201cThe interest and support is definitely out there,%u201d he explains, %u201cand has been all along.%u201dBased on an enthusiastic and optimistic group at Friday%u2019s game, I am happy to say I think he is correct.Bob Valvano is head basketball coach at St. Francis College in Brooklyn Heights. The team%u2019s first game of the season is Nov.29 at home against Morgan State at 7:30pm.ITALIAN ART IRON WORKSBURGLAR PROOF SPECIALISTSPROTECT YOUR VALUABLES WITH SA FE GUARDS%u2022W IN D O W GUARDS%u2022 DOOR GUARDS%u2022 CELLAR DOORS%u2022S K Y L IG H T GUARDS%u2022 ROOF HATCHES%u2022S T E L L STRUCTURES%u2022 LOBBY DOORS%u2022 STEPS-TO-ORDER%u2022 STAIRCASES%u2022S P IR A L STAIRS%u2022 PORCHES%u2022 %u2022 RAILINGSBrownstone HousesLandm ark BuildingsO ur Specialty875-136238 Bergen ST.Erected in 1931, this affo rdab ly priced cooperative residenceoffers classic design, m o d ern am e n itie sand an excitin g , m in u te s -to -M a n h a tta n location .Studios from $45,500One Bedrooms from $89,500%u2022 24 hour doorman%u2022 Fully-renova ted apartments feature deluxe appliances, convenientdining areas and marble art deco style baths.%u2022 Spacious, sunny rooms%u2014many with panoramic views of theManhattan skyline.%u2022 Close to major subway stops; D, M, 2,3,4,5, to Atlantic Avenue;A to Lafayette Avenue.TheGriffin101 Lafayette Avenue B ro o k ly n ,N e w York 11217Sales O ffic e o n Prem ises.
