The Al Wathba Fossil Dunes Reserve serves as a testament to the UAE’s
commitment to preserving its natural wonders and promoting ecotourism. It
is situated 45 kilometres east of Abu Dhabi. Overall, it covers a vast seven
square kilometres. The reserve is home to over 1,700 fossil dunes, a unique
feature making it the first of its kind in the UAE and the wider West Asia
region. Notably, it holds the highest concentration of fossil dunes in a single
location in Abu Dhabi.
Geological Significance and Recognition
The reserve is internationally recognized as a geological monument by the
International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Also, the reserve is on
its way to achieving UNESCO Global Geopark status. Geologists believe these
fossil dunes were formed during the Ice Age around 120 thousand years ago.
It offers a fascinating glimpse into the Earth’s ever-changing natural world.
The distinct shapes of these formations in the Al Wathba area result from the
intricate interplay between wind force and sediment supply.
