little more than huge umbrella-sized leaves mottled with white mold. And the Japanese beetles are the scourge of summer. Despite the beetle trap, they continue to munch on the zinnias and lone rose bush, scrawny as it is.
By now the grassy weeds in the flowerbeds are up to my knees. I spend another day yanking them out by the roots. At least now those beds look neat- er and defined. I can see the dirt between the plants, free from invaders.
I did have a pleasant surprise early on this sea-
son. Now, I am fairly new to the compost scene. But last winter I plopped all my gourds and pumpkins in the compost heap. Oh, let the squirrels fatten up with a feast! This summer, I found a lovely, delicate squash plant of some sort flourishing on the heap among all the other scraps I’d thrown in there. I gin- gerly lifted it out and transplanted it by the brook. It totally took over, latching its tendrils onto every- thing in its path! It’s gigantic and has produced a pile of décor-worthy gourds! It was my Do Not Dis- turb plant — let it go wherever, even if it chokes the
