 The fall sports season has begun. Before the season get fully under way, there will be much news about coaches which deserve to be included in the Connecticut Coach. As a leader in Connecticut high school sports, won’t you take a few minutes and send me information about high school coaches, their career milestone accomplishments, their awards and recognitions (Coach of the Year, Assistant COTY, hall of fame selections, etc.). Also information about the passing of coaches and newly hired coaches in your area will be appreciated. n News about coaches being appointed to new positions: Kofi Remey is the new girls’ soccer coach at Lewis Mills School.
n Joshua Bessette the new head boys’ soccer coach at Waterford High School.
n Sil Vitiello has been hired as head coach of the Trumbull High boys’ soccer team.
n Dave Sagnella was appointed head coach of the Lyman Hall/HK/Coginchaug co-op boys’ hockey team.
n Mike Anderson is the new girls’ swim coach at Staples. n Dom Lombardozzi will be the new baseball coach at
Sheehan High School.
n Brian Lugo will serve as coach of the Division I ice
hockey coach for Immaculate H.S.
n Ernie DiStasi named interim athletic director at Seymour High.
n New boys’ cross country coaches in eastern Connecticut are Jaclyn Sullivan (NFA) and Jeff Parkinson (Stoning- ton). On the girl’s side, Jeff Parkinson is the new coach at Stonington.
n Matt Zagura is the new boy’s track coach at Grasso Tech. n Mary Mesek is the assistant tennis coach at Mercy. In Norwalk Lee Cundiff is the new girls’ volleyball coach
and Evan Kelly is the new girls’ basketball coach.
n Other new girls’ basketball coaches are Michael Morgan,
Ledyard; and Dhana Tulloc-Rehol, Norwich.
n Danny Melzer has been appointed boys’ basketball
coach at New Canaan H.S.
n Rich Fanning is the new girls’ and boys’ ski team coach
at Weston.
n Bassick’s new boys’ soccer coach is Sal Hanaif.
n Cheshire High has appointed Mike Devine as boys’ lacrosse coach. Tom Cunningham is now the girls’ soc- cer coach at Seymour.
n New football coaches at their respective schools are Bryan Muller, Brookfield; Tywan Jenkins, Bunnell; Eric Hennessy, Glastonbury; Anthony Morello, Greenwich; Sean Murray, New Milford; O’Brien Tech; Mike Kearns, Seymour; Adam Behrends, Staples; Anthony Savati, Guilford; and Tom Broschards, Trinity Catholic/Wright Tech.
n Jennifer Garzone is the new MCW United football coach. She is the first female high school football coach in the state.
COACHES’ RECOGNITION
n The inaugural Notre Dame (West Haven) Athletic Hall of Fame will be held in early October. Among the induct- ees are coaches and athletes who were luminaries at ND, including Joe Tonelli Sr., player and coach as well as athletic director; Tom Marcucci, coach and athletic director; the late Ray Tellier, football and baseball coach; Ray Ciarleglio, standout three sport player and longtime area football coach; Jim Guercia, baseball, football and track coach; Gary Palladino, successful basketball coach at ND (412 wins); Bill Parkinson, track and field and cross country coach; the late John Janenda, ND’s first football coach; and Richard Lawler Sr., ND’s first swim coach.
n Selected to coach in the JCC All Star Basketball Games were Nick Augelli (Crosby) and Jason Shea (Notre Dame, W.H.) In the girls’ JCC games, Holly Miso (New London) and Bob McMahon (Thomaston) coaches in East Team and Dave Danko (Warde) and Tim Tredwell (Hand) coached the West team. Michael Lussier (Cheshire) was selected as the New Haven Register’s SCC baseball coach of the year.
n The New Haven Register’s spring sports coaches of the Year were Pete Capezzone (Old Saybrook, girls’ track); Chris Raffone (Amity, boys’ tennis); Denise Sousa (Laurel- ton Hall, girls’ tennis); Jim Holleran (Guilford golf); Michel Lussier (Cheshire baseball); Sue Bavone (Cheshire, boys’ volleyball); Wendy Epke (Guilford, girls’ lacrosse); Michele Moore (Hillhouse, boys’ track); Joe Morrell (West Haven, softball); and A. J. Alessi (Notre Dame, W.H.
