    Forward Thinking Music School Plants Roots in Town Center

Learning to play music has been proven to help children excel academically which is one of the main reasons most parents push to have their chil- dren learn an instrument at a young age. Music edu- cation improves recall and retention of verbal infor- mation, advances math achievement and increases student’s average SAT scores. The benefits are not only true for children but adults as well; learning to jam on an instrument has proven to strengthen your brain, increase memory, reduce stress, im- prove multi tasking skills and overall just make you happier. If you or your children have been thinking about learning to play an instrument there may not be a better time!
The Rock House School of Music opened their doors in downtown Wallingford June 1. This forward thinking music school hopes to help grow the arts community of Wallingford and surrounding towns.
“We searched all over Connecticut for a new lo- cation for our school: Westport, Fairfield, Stratford, Branford and others, but when we started looking deeper into Wallingford, my wife, Cathy and I fell in love with the town. The people, the central location and the entire community were a perfect match for our school.” said owner/founder John McCarthy.
One thing that makes this school stand out from others is that McCarthy has authored more than 120 books and instructional programs for learning all instruments. These books are sold worldwide in stores such as Barnes & Noble, Guitar Center and Sam Ash Music. Their curricula is the core of the learning system in the school. By adding elements such as on-line support, backing tracks and interac- tive tools they excel the learning process and make it fun and exciting to learn.
McCarthy explains, “I ran my music school for more than 30 years and I couldn’t find a curriculum I felt catered to today’s players. We lived in a different
