COACHES IN THE SPOTLIGHT
n In girls’ basketball newly appointed coaches for the winter season are Maria Conlon, Notre Dame-Fairfield; Matt Ocasio, Crosby; Katie Burke, Kennedy; Evan Kelley, Norwalk; Ken Hall, Litchfield; David Kohn, New London; Daniel Still, Waterford; Katie Burke, Kennedy; Courtney Gomez, NFA; and Dan McClure, Wheeler.
n In boys’ basketball some of new coaches are Todd Trimmar, Darien; John Mariano, Naugatuck; Shawn Stanco, interim coach at Notre Dame-Fairfield; Timothy Strong, Montville; Jay Wosencroft, Ston- ington.
n Among the new boys’ swimming coaches are Katey Kokomoor, Fitch Coop; Todd Dyer, Litchfield; Ray Snyder Jr., Sacred Heart High; Kevin Reeder, Cheshire; and Mike Magas, Nonnewaug.
n In indoor track Greg Knight and Joe Asmus are the new coaches at Cromwell.
n Allyn Quibble is the new wrestling coach at Ledyard. n At NFA Cindy Briggs has taken over as gymnastics
coach.
COACHES’ RECOGNITION
n The Connecticut Sports Writer’ Alliance will present Gold Keys to five high school coaches. They are Cookie Bromage, Enfield H.S., field hockey; Joe Grippo, the Morgan School, girls’ volleyball and bas- ketball; Lou Milardo, Hale Ray H.S., softball; Ricky Shook, Danbury H.S., wrestling; and Angela Tam- maro, Greenwich Academy athletic director, field hockey, basketball and lacrosse coach.
n Middletown Sports Hall of Fame inducted Martin Ryczek was a long-time coach and athletic admin- istrator who currently is the athletic director at Hale-
Ray High School.
n On Sept. 23, 2019, the turf playing surface at Enfield H.S. was dedicated as Cookie Bromage Field.
n The Southern Connecticut Diamond Club inducted Howie Gura, Shelton; Tom Marcucci, Notre Dame; Ed McCarthy, West Haven; Walt Novak, Branford; and Mike Proto, North Haven, into its Hall of Fame.
n The New Haven Tap Off Club inducted Megan Rooney Borrelli, Guilford, and Hamden Hall; Jim Ferraro, North Haven; Larry Kelley, Lee H.S.; Jim Rooney, Guilford, Kolbe and Bunnell; and Dan Sca- vone, athletic director and Director of CIAC Officials Association into its 2019 Hall of Fame.
n The East Haven Alumni association Hall of Fame honored Rusty Dunn, football and track coach, into its Hall of Fame.
n The coaches selected as the New Haven Register fall coaches of the year are Chris Stoner, Xavier, boys’ cross country; Jim Ford, Guilford girls’ cross country; Kitty Palmer, Guilford field hockey; Brian Fitzgerald, Xavier, boys’ soccer; Kyler McIntosh, Cheshire, girls’ soccer; Laura Anastasio, Guilford, girls’ volleyball; Nate Hill, Hamden, girls’ swim- ming; and Scott Benoit, East Haven, football.
n The Amity Alumni athletic Hall of Fame inducted former ice hockey coach, Gary Lindgren; Patricia Mascia, former girls’ basketball and field hockey coach; and Ted Czepiga, former football coach into its Hall of Fame.
n Inducted into the Shelton High School Hall of Fame are Bill Banfy, football; Elaine Biervevicz-Piazza, athletic director at Lyman Hall High School and Sacred Heart Academy; Ken Bobowick, golf; Ed Finn, football and track; and Maurice “Moe’ Mar- tin, boys’ basketball.
n Cheshire’s football coach, Don Drust, was recently honored by the New Haven Football Officials Asso- ciation with the Vincent J. Reilly COTY award. He was selected as the All Jaffee Football COTH by the Waterbury Republican.
n The late Frank Grandel, baseball; Paul Gagliardi, tennis; and Eddie Bethke, baseball; are former Hor- net coaches who were inducted into the Branford
