ANTIGUA CARNIVAL JULY AUGUST
On our island the pinnacle of all cultural celebrations is Carnival, elements of which are deeply rooted in the original festivities that were held to celebrate the emancipation of slavery in 1834. This is a ten-day event that begins in the last week of July and ends during the rst week of August. The festival features colourful parades, Carnival queen pageants, the local calypso, soca and steel pan music competitions and live entertainment on the streets. The culmination is two days of dancing and revelry in the streets of St. John’s, with carnival bands full of merrymakers dressed in elegantly decorated, colourful costumes.

Nato all’epoca coloniale per festeggiare l’emancipazione dalla schiavitù dei neri d’America (nel 1834), inizia l’ultima settimana di luglio e dura no al primo martedìdiagosto.Èuncarnevale colorato ed emozionante. Le attività si svolgono per le strade di St. John’s e presso l’Antigua Recreation Ground che si trasforma in “Carnival City” per questa occasione. Tutta l’isola vive il carnevale come una festa, con danze di strada, bellissimi costumi, concorsi di steel band, canto e musica calypso e con l’elezione del re e della regina del carnevale. Il culmine dei festeggiamenti si raggiunge il primo lunedì d’agosto quando, alle quattro del mattino, i fuochi si accendono e comincia il “jouvei” morning, in cui tutti si riuniscono per le strade della capitale formando un gigantesco serpentone danzante.
