There are a number of guided coach tours offered by tour operators and this is a good way to get an initial view of the island. If you decide to go public and experience local culture, public transport buses are generally small, 14 seaters. Bear in mind that quite long waits are possible, especially on routes that require a bus change. There are regular stops or you can request a stop anywhere. In St. John’s the East Bus Station is on Independence Avenue and covers routes to the east and north; the West Bus Station is opposite the market with buses to the south of the island and English Harbour.
Explore at your own pace with a car, jeep, scooter from one of Antigua’s rental companies. For car rental, a local driving licence is necessary. It is provided directly by the hire company at a cost of EC$50 (US$20) and is valid for 3 months.
BY TAXI
This is a great way to see the island with fares set by the government but do agree on the price before you set off and know whether it is in EC$ or US$.
