EDITORIAL
ADJUST YOUR SAILS
ICAN’T CHANGE THE direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination,” said the much-quoted American entertainer Jimmy Dean. It seems like a very appropriate thought given the whirlwind of change that constantly buffets and billows around this industry.
“companies are predictably reliable at changing tack, but judging which direction they decide to go is less predictable.
Suncorp had Repairlink centres where customers dropped off cars and the two quote system. Capital SMART started to gain traction with more volume being directed their way, and the system was changed. Now they are testing the waters for a sale of SMART.
Reading some of the old Paint & Panel magazines I rescued during our office refit, confirmed this has always been the case. Insurance
Meanwhile IAG is trialling drop and go centres, again controlling the customer
experience and creating a scenario where the repairer doesn’t have any contact with
the customer. At the same time, AMA Gemini is still in hungry consolidating mode.
If another player sails into the market to buy SMART, or an existing player buys it, the current will once again change direction and this will have a ripple effect across the industry.
It’s never smooth sailing, or if you do find a calm patch you can be sure that it will soon be ruffled when some other variable, that you likely have no control over, comes into play.
Yet here you are, reading this editorial, still in business where many before you have run aground or pulled into dock and vowed never to set sail again.
So take a moment to give yourself credit for being able to adjust your sails. Continue to accept help from anyone who offers it
– industry associations who have developed business tools
and services specifically for you; your suppliers who offer
training and other services to assist in speedier, more
accurate, more profitable repairs; your accountant,
your staff, the articles in this magazine, events
such as Paint & Panel L!VE, because they will all
help you reach your destination.
