This is one company that doesn’t have the blues despite the colour scheme. The staff are loving this purpose-built shop in the Perth suburb of Malaga.
VAN AND AMY Lam took the plunge and built a new shop while still running the old one which they had outgrown. We didn’t see the old shop but it sounds like it was old and cramped. All the stress of the build is behind them now and hats off to Lams. This is a sharp, ultra modern repair facility that’s been well planned, with a great production flow and all the latest equipment.
It has ample parking at the front and a big yard around the side with a spacious parts room. The panel shop is bright and attractive with a great LED lighting array that Van built, the bays are spacious, everything is neatly labeled and the place is spotless. We’ve noticed that when painters are owners often the paint shop might look good but the panel shop not so much. Both sides sparkle here and the paint mixing room was blindingly clean.
A smart reception flows into a comfortable, attractive and well-equipped customer wating area and there’s an excellent board room as well.
Van understands branding and marketing and the company name adorns the walls and his spraybooths. They launched a new website for the new shop and undertake print advertising, keep in touch

with customers via social media and engage in local sponsorships. Apart from providing this great working environment, staff are offered bonuses, flexible working arrangements and there are events for both the team and their families. Lam also seems to have a great working relationship with his major work provider, RAC.
It’s great to meet a team that’s genuinely enthusiastic about the industry and who embraces change.
“New technology is always exciting in this industry,” Lam said. “We love that there are technologies continuously arriving that are making repair and paint times quicker, and programs such as 1Q1 that give a real time picture of workshop flow and allow us to easily communicate with our customers.”
What are his plans for the future? “We would like to create a one-stop shop where customers can have their vehicle serviced, tyres changed, and body repaired at the same time. Additionally, we would like in the future to offer customers ‘same day’ repairs for smaller jobs.”
We think Fletchers has a bright future.
POWELL’S COMMENTS
