(see P58 for more on this program). Shipbuilding will become a complete end-to-end operation with ‘steel in and ships out’. The new facility will enable two vessels at a time to be built under cover. Work on what has been termed ‘the grand hall’ and other sheds in the complex is well underway.
The concept for the OSDP has been developed by Odense Maritime Technology to support a continuous build program. Lendlease is the Managing Contractor, with lead designer Au- recon undertaking detailed design work. The capital cost of this project is estimated to be $535 million, with the new yard due to be commissioned during the first half of 2020.
The steel raising for the OSDP involves the elevation of more than 8,000 tonnes of structural steel fabricated by local South Australian companies, Samaras Structural Engineer- ing and SA Structural Steel – two of the 54 Australian suppli- ers involved in this project. Almost 90 per cent of the steel required for construction is produced in Australia.
Some 700 Australian businesses have pre-qualified to be part of the Hunter Class program. A recent Oxford Econom- ics report into the program revealed it will contribute an esti- mated $17 billion to the national economy and generate over 6,300 full-time jobs across Australia at the program’s peak in 2028. The Australian steel industry will benefit with orders for 48,000 tonnes of steel.
From left to right: construction of Building 22 which is being undertaken using a unique application of strand-jacking to rotate the walls into place. Divided into 10 wall sections and two roof sections, this approach enables the construction of each section on the ground, enabling productive construction and importantly, safer construction by reducing the time workers are working at heights.
