Growing new markets
Changing consumer tastes and the latest Australia- Indonesia trade deal mean there are plenty of export opportunities for the fresh produce industry.
AUSTRALIA’S fresh produce industry is perfectly positioned to take advantage of lucrative export market opportunities.
Last year, citrus export earnings climbed 41 per cent to $462 million. Rising demand for Australian citrus in Asia, especially China, saw 17 per cent growth to 273,000 tonnes in 2017.
The recent Indonesia- Australia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IA-CEPA), will help vegetable growers looking to export to Indonesia.
According to Industry body AUSVEG, the deal will create a framework for a new era of closer economic engagement betweenthetwocountries.
In the 2017/18 financial year, Australian vegetable exports to Indonesia were valued at $3.7 million. Potatoes were the top commodity, and accounted for nearly half of the total.
There has been a 20 per cent increase on table grape exports to Indonesia this year as well.
In 2018 Australia exported more than 15,000 tonnes of a wide range of seed and seedless varieties to Indonesia.
AUSVEG says Indonesia’s developing population and proximity shows strong potential for local growers to boost fresh vegetable exports.
The vegetable industry is seeking to increase its export valueto$315millionayearby
2020, an increase of 40 per cent from 2016, AUSVEG CEO James Whiteside says.
“The agreement to increase import quotas and decrease tariffs for carrot and potato exports – two of the Australian vegetable industry’s key export crops – should lead to an immediateincreaseinthetrade
of these commodities to Indonesia,” Whiteside says.
“Given Indonesia is predicted to have the world’s fifth largest economy by 2030, the IA-CEPA will help ensure that Australia, and its horticulture producers, will be able to benefit from the country’s expected economic growth.” ✷
