New era as W&H looks to digital flexo
WINDMÖLLER & Hölscher (W&H) is developing its first
digital single-pass press for flexible packaging, using Xaar 5601 printheads for piezo inkjet technology, heralding a new era in flexo packaging production.
The announcement from W&H is a significant milestone in the development of an economical and stable digital printing process for flexible packaging, following the successful adoption of digital technology by the labelling and commercial printing sectors.
Digital flexo offers the potential of short run work, with variable data, offering brands promotional opportunities, versioning and minimal lead times.
W&H is one of the world’s leading flexo machinery manufacturers, and the first company to publicly announce that its next generation of printers will be driven by the Xaar 5601.
The Xaar 5601 incorporates a number of innovative technologies.

Using Xaar's new Thin Film Piezo Silicon Mems technology, the Xaar 5601 is high resolution with 5600 nozzles, capable of jetting up to 8 litres of fluid per hour. New innovations such as AcuDrp Technology allow complete control over greyscale
drop ejection for perfect image quality. In addition, the Xaar 5601 incorporates TF Technology to maximise production up time, print quality and lifetime.
Rollem offers fast and flexible cutting
ROLLEM (represented in Australia and New Zealand by Graph-Pak) has displayed the Insignia 6 die cutter at the recent SGIA Las Vegas, as well as its 76-centimetre SS semi-slitter, which it bills as “the ultimate semi-slitting, kiss-cutting solution”.
The flexo-magnetic Insignia 6 can cut up to 4000 50x50 centimetre sheets per hour, handling thicknesses up to 30pt or 675 gsm. For larger applications, it also comes in 38x50 cm, as well as B2 size, and the new Insignia X3’s 61x61cm sheet size. To maximise sheet layouts, the Insignia 6 can cut in either landscape or portrait modes, and is suitable for short to long run sizes from one-off to hundreds of thousands.
The SS semi-slitter is available in five sizes, from 45cm to 106cm wide, and can cut up to 26,000 sheets per hour. It can back-slit or face-slit a broad range of pressure-sensitive stocks, from fine paper through to heavy gauge plastic, and has both a single-head and double-head option.

THE new Sacmi high-speed filling line has been designed to handle a
wide variety of food products. The line is part of a range of complete filling solutions offering high productivity, flexibility, and process quality, and has also been configured for output rates of up to 72,000 bottles an hour. Sacmi, represented in Oceania by HBM Packaging Technologies, has capacity to broaden the scope of its filling solutions from beverage-only to any food product.
Sacmi FFS horizontal packaging machines also come in a range of configurations, in aseptic and non-aseptic versions (with output rates from 6000 to 100,000 containers per hour for 10-250ml bottles), including a new smart solution for dairy product packaging.
The packaging machine can also incorporate the Sacmi shrink sleeve applicator, also in a multi-pack configuration. This gives final products added value, and gives customers new opportunities for individual brand enhancement.
Sacmi’s labelling solutions are particularly significant to the Chinese market the company says, especially the ARENA roll-fed labelling machine, which can produce 48,000 labelled containers per hour.
