SPRAY GUNS
FINDING THE RIGHT GUN
WITH THE ECONOMY continually tightening, every bodyshop has been forced to re-examine their work practices and their equipment in search of a better bottom line.
In every bodyshop, there’s one element that cannot be ignored: that’s the paint and its delivery to the surface of the vehicle.
The right equipment is paramount if this goal is to be achieved. Anest Iwata has turned to its team of specialist fluid engineers and research and development scientists to find a range of high transfer efficiency (HTE) spray guns that operate with air
consumption at 9cfm and a
transfer efficiency of up to
90 per cent.
These figures may depend on
what sort of paint is used, but
there are other benefits, too, like
less power consumption. This translates into compressors that have reduced run times and
with less effort which translates into lower
energy usage that results in significant
dollar savings. With rising energy costs this
has become a major factor in every bodyshop operation.
To the tradesman, guns that are lighter, easier to use
and clean is what new spray guns are all about. Lighter weight construction through new alloy components, improved atomisation, more efficient compressor usage and high transfer efficiency are but a few of the expected benefits of new guns.
Anest Iwata is a specialist in liquid spraying technology and offers spray guns for all types of paint materials and all of its guns can be used for waterborne and solvent paints as the fluid passages are completely stainless steel.
The continued penetration of waterborne paint basecoats into mainstream refinish markets has led to the trend of keeping solvent and water guns separate to minimise any cross contamination. Paint companies drive this trend because they want to ensure that there is no contamination between the two paint types. Different paint types also spray differently due to the solid content, so it is wise to use the best tool for the job.
The Anest Iwata W400WBX series features split nozzle technology, known as pre-atomisation, allowing painters to once again lower the spray pressure. This technology commences the atomisation process earlier than before to deliver a refined spray pattern and finer atomisation for even better results.
Anest Iwata has further developed this technology with the Pininfarina co-designed Supernova range available in both WS400 and as an LVLP version; the LS400.

An unsurpassed level of gravity gun performance, the Supernova creates a long flat pattern delivering paint in a precise and even
manner allowing for an extremely even overlap and a flat, even lay down of clear coats. Consistent droplet size during atomisation
avoids solvent boil, pin holing on HS clear coats due to the centre heavy fan patterns common with older spray guns.
With a growing trend of spray painters all owning guns, it is important that gun
manufacturers listen and supply what customers tell them they need. The Supernova range delivers all these: guns that are comfortable to hold, easy to clean, light and flexible to use.
It is of critical importance that the spray gun can support the needs of the painter by being both flexible and efficient in all climatic conditions regardless of the paint technology being sprayed.
Equipment, however, stretches to more than just the spray gun. The tightening of
WH&S legislation, the prevalence of Safe Work Inspectors and local council planning requirements all contribute to the need for the bodyshop owner to be compliant.
Even with waterborne products, the toxic elements of the paint are still present in the primers and clear coats. Half masks do not comply with this legislation and you must have the right breathing gear in place. Breathing the right air and avoiding toxic fumes is the reason for all the safety gear – air fed respirators, gloves, spraysuits and safety boots are just some
of the PPS painters require on a day to day basis.
