ZAMBEZI WELCOME
For as long as he can remember, Sussex In- let-based doctor Graham Morgan has been attracted to rugged, remote landscapes and wild animals.
“Most of my images have been taken in Sub- Saharan Africa, Antarctica and the Arctic,” he explains, including this striking image cap- tured in Zambezi’s Mana Pools, a location he loves for the intimacy it allows with its subjects. “Anticipation is everything in wildlife photography, and understanding the be-
haviour of your subject is paramount. You really need to be ready before it happens.”
For this image, Graham lay on the ground, waiting for the swinging head of this seven- ton bull elephant to fill his frame.
“I’ve always been grateful for the oppor- tunity to interact with wildlife on the level that I have,” he says. “It’s a humbling expe- rience when truly wild creatures allow you into their lives.”

LESLEY DOWNIE
The elephant image is such a powerful capture. Strength, might, and awe are all captured with the direct confrontational lower camera angle. The gaze of the animal is totally compelling. Having said that, what gives this image that extra special “wow factor” is the movement of the beast’s front foot kicking up the dust so the viewer really feels the power and greatness of this majestic animal. There is a sense of danger as well, which elevates the image from a pure static capture. The black and white handling also gives a strong “punchy” edge to an already excellent capture.

I kept going back to visit this image. It is compelling and stays with you. It draws the viewer into the frame and is both frightening and beautiful. Elephants are such majestic animals and the photographer has captured this perfectly. Accordingly it is one of my favourites in this category.
