An image captured using a centuries-old photographic technique, a powerful image of a wild elephant and a striking image of one of the most photographed buildings on earth share the honours in The Mono Awards 2020.
Now in its second year, The Mono Awards 2020 featured
a prize pool of more than $10,000, thanks to sponsors digiDirect, Momento and Momento Pro, in our hunt for the best black and white imagery in Australasia.
With more than 50 per cent more entries than last year, thousands of images from photographers in Australia
and New Zealand were entered in the competition, with photographers Brence Coghill, Liz Barker and Bee Elle taking out the People, Places and Animals categories, respectively.
The competition was judged by a panel of eight professional photographers, selected for their expertise
in the black and white format.
For judge Anthony McKee, the work submitted mixed
strong examples of conventional imagery, including the use of some more traditional image making processes, through to newer ideas, all in ways that were exciting to see.
“Many entrants were capable of seeing ideas beyond what most other people might notice, and that makes the judging process so refreshing in an age when everyone thinks they are a photographer,” he said.
Over the next few pages you can see the top 30 images across the three categories in the competition, as well as judges’ comments on the winning and runner-up images, and tips for strong black and white imagery. You may notice some images have received the same ranking–in instances where multiple images received the same score, they received the same final result.
A huge thank you to our major sponsor, digiDirect, and supporting sponsors, Momento and Momento Pro. Without them we simply couldn’t run The Mono Awards. Their support of Australasian photographers is hugely appreciated by all of us here at AP. And a big thanks to our judging panel – Anthony McKee, Lesley Downie, Natalie Grono, Douwe Dijkstra, Matt Palmer, Jackie Ranken, Alex Cearns and John Crawford.
Finally, a huge thank you to everyone who entered The Mono Awards 2020. We have been blown away by the depth and quality of black and white photography entered this year, and take great pride in giving this timeless artform the recognition it deserves.
