          Less is more
SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED AND engi- neered for the modern Australian home, Dai- kin has released new 18kW & 20kW Inverter Ducted systems.
The trend of maximizing the home foot- print on blocks has brought some challeng- es to the placement of air conditioning out- door units.
The new Daikin 18kW & 20kW Inverter Ducted systems have been redesigned with a 50% reduction in the depth of the outdoor unit to 320mm, which enables easy installa- tion into narrow side access areas.
Smart device con- trol is also available with Daikin Airbase designed for iOS and Android devices (adapter required). Homeowners can con- trol their Daikin duct- ed system through their smart devices, anywhere, anytime.
 Cyber-smart building networks
FOR ANYONE INVOLVED with smart build- ings it remains vital to stay connected to key de- velopments in the industry, especially as the evo- lution of technology impacts the delivery of smarter and safer buildings.
Of interest to the industry will be the ARBS Speaker Series presentation: Cyber Security and the Emergence of Smart Buildings by Travis Che- hab of AECOM.
This presentation will discuss how critical in- frastructure and operational technology are emerging as accessible and attractive targets to malicious actors and will consider threats to modern buildings from a security perspective.
These modern buildings continue to get smarter, and as they do, cybersecurity is becom- ing a very real challenge for those invested in
protecting connected systems and the people occupying these spaces from emerging online attacks.
Coupled with existing and long-standing vul- nerabilities in legacy OT systems, the emergence of the unregulated Internet of Things (IoT) tech- nologies will dramatically expand the threat landscape over the next five years.
Commenting on the session, Chehab said all stakeholders must refine how they ap- proach smart building networks, ensuring that the levels and layers of security are ad- dressed by design.
“With more buildings favouring connectivity, it is critical to continue education and dialogue from the ground up about cybersecurity and risk mitigation,” he said.
  Fan upgrades for improved ROI
Manage systems
anywhere
CONTROL YOUR DAIKIN SkyAir systems via your smartphone or tablet with the new SkyAir Mobile Controller (BRP072C42-1).
This is an addition to the current range of WLAN adaptors with an app available for both Apple and Android devices. The app also now supports up to 10 indoor units connected to the same network (each unit will require an adapter).
With the SkyAir Mobile Controller app in combination with the plug-and-play
Wi-Fi module and an ac-
tive Internet connection,
you can manage your Dai- kin air conditioning units from anywhere, anytime.

THIS ARBS SESSION on the efficiency of air movement systems will show how fan upgrades can improve energy efficiency.
European markets such as the Nordic region and Germany have pioneered the use of higher efficiency air movement sys- tems and driven down the usage of elec- tricity in housing and building stock.
However, HVAC continues to use the most energy in commercial buildings and
this is the area where energy reductions benefit the bottom line the most.
This seminar will outline the new technologies and improvements that have been made on the European stage and shares tips and lessons learnt to en- able Australasian designers to improve their systems.
Examples will be provided of building upgrades on a typical high-rise in Mel- bourne.
It will also explore the options for fan upgrades in commercial buildings as stand alone or in combination with up- grades of other HVAC systems such as chillers, cooling towers, VAV systems and controls.
The session will be presented by Susanne Lohmann & Thomas Heine, ebm-papst.
