Solid solution
A new separator offers an alternative to conventional sludge dewatering technologies.
The KDS unit also comes in a skid- mounted configuration.
A KDS separator that offers a compact and cost-efficient alternative to conventional sludge dewatering technologies has been introduced in Australia.
KDS technology is used for thickening of dissolved air flotation (DAF) sludge and can achieve solids capture of 97 per cent thickened sludge at a dryness of 17 per cent. Waste activated sludge dryness levels achieved typically range from 15-18 per cent dryness.
The solution, which has been successfully applied worldwide, makes DAF waste handling safer, according to its exclusive distributor CST Wastewater Solutions. It does this by eliminating the OH&S hazards associated with
damper and heavier output from treatment plants.
The KDS Multidisc Roller system requires no washwater, while capturing 90-99 per cent of solids.

THE AMOUNT OF SOLIDS CAPTURE ENABLED BY THE KDS TECHNOLOGY
It has been built using Japanese technology and engineered in Australasia to overcome the limitations of technologies such as screw
presses, belt
presses and
centrifuges typically employed in small-to-medium applications.
For small plants, the unit’s low shear action can also eliminate the need for dissolved air flotation by removing and dewatering flocculated material without the need for air injection. Also, the cost is less than half that of conventional DAF systems with its smaller footprint and the advantage of producing a dewatered cake rather than a sloppy float.
“This technology represents a major step forward in
overcoming cost and sustainability issues common throughout Australia and New Zealand,” says CST Wastewater Solutions MD Mike Bambridge. “With the KDS’ minimal water, power and space demands, it is ideally suited to both SMBs and also to those operating in remote or environmentally sensitive situations.” ✷
