The Pointy End
FOOD safety and security made headlines last month for all of the wrong reasons, when we saw the strawberry industry brought to its knees by the sewing needle contamination crisis. No doubt there will be much hand-wringing on how the broader supply chain handled the problem, but in this issue, in our hygiene & safety feature on p42, we focus on the response of inspection system suppliers and their efforts to help producers sift through the technology options to protect their brands from future incidents.
Also in this issue, on p34, we explore the high-tech measures being taken by beverage company Beloka Water to eliminate the possibility of contamination in its premium still and mineral waters, which it sells across Australia and in China.
Dairy innovation is also continuing apace, and this month we take a look at Top Down Yoghurt from Brownes Dairy, and its promise of an easier squeeze on p7, and we look inside Bannister Downs’ new $30m robotic dairy, which leverages innovative and eco-friendly pouch packaging technology on p20.
Plant design is another big focus in this issue, and on p26 we take you through Woolworths’ new distribution centre, which is not only Victoria’s largest highbay, but also boasts 14 kilometres of high speed lines, 50 robots and a new level of smarts when it comes to distributing goods across its stores.
In such a fast-paced industry, adaptable thinking is key, and with this in mind, we talk to Wiley’s MD Tom Wiley about his evolving journey to build great food facilities – and by creating a strong company culture and empowering his staff, to also build a better world – so dig in!
