Packaging to fuss over
Australasian company Bonson-Savpac’s packaging innovation delivers cat food products in a convenient format with high shelf appeal.
By nature, a cat is a fussy crea- ture and thus it is hardly a surprise that one of Australia’s leading brands of cat food is named Fussy Cat.
Launched 15 years ago, Fussy Cat has built up a loyal following among discerning cat owners. This premium cat food brand is positioned as a ‘complete’ food, offering all the nutritional re-
quirements for a cat’s daily diet. Owner of the Fussy Cat brand, The Real Pet Food Company, has recently expanded its offer with a single- serve pot that incorporates a high oxygen barrier to help maintain freshness and appeal. The 70g pot delivers the convenience of a less- mess single meal serving straight
into the cat food dish.
The packaging’s high quality
branding graphics make extensive use of the full-body-wrap in- mould-label (IML) decoration. The IML incorporates transparent win- dows to allow the consumer to see the freshness of the product. This eye-catching labelling helps the Fussy Cat range stand out on-shelf as a premium-quality offer.
Also, the high barrier container helps to preserve the fresh product and extend the shelf life – welcome news for retailers.
Collaborating with The Real Pet Food Company on this pioneering project was Australasian packaging company Bonson-Savpac. The Real Pet Food Company’s Fussy Cat port- folio lead, Jarrod Edgecombe, says he’s delighted with the results of partnering with such an innovative packaging manufacturer.
“Working with Bonson has been an absolute pleasure – they have been proactive and very responsive to our needs,” comments Edgecombe.
It is also a time to look to the future for how the company can meet the sustainable packaging guidelines and make a positive contribution to a circular economy.”
MANUFACTURING MILESTONE
Bonson-Savpac’s Auckland-based parent company, Bonson Industrial Company Limited, this year cele- brates a milestone of 35 years of manufacturing.
The CEO of Bonson, David Tsui, acknowledges that this significant anniversary is an opportunity to reflect on how far the business has come from its early days when Bonson was making takeaway containers for Auckland’s food service industry.
Ongoing business expansion has seen Bonson move from the initial modest facilities to a purpose-built manufacturing site in Auckland, completed in 2012.
The ‘new’ manufacturing plant is one of New Zealand’s most sophisticated food-grade manufac- turing facilities, and has been instrumental in the company’s growth and its expanding list of clients that include leading FMCG food manufacturers and retailers across Australasia.
David Tsui says, “While there is much to celebrate with Bonson’s history, importantly it is also a time to look to the future for how the company can meet the sustain- able packaging guidelines and make a positive contribution to a circular economy.”
He notes that industry changes are bringing “fantastic opportunities” to push the boundaries of innovation.
“Bonson is committed to leverag- ing the same type of passion and energy to take up the business’s sustainability challenges,” he says.
So, what does Bonson have in store for its next packaging innova- tion? It’s a case of ‘watch this space’ according to ANZ business manag- er, Glenn Drake, who says: “Every approach from leading food manu- facturers who are looking for a food-grade packaging company to partner with, leads Bonson to push beyond the expected solutions and service boundaries to create unique advantages for every customer. We believe that honouring our cus- tomers’ greatest potential is what ultimately serves our own.” ■
