CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE
Closing 2019 and looking to an exciting 2020
Welcome to the final 2019 edition of Machinery Matters, brought to you by the APPMA in an exclusive partnership with PKN Packaging News. As previous issues and the pages that follow will attest, the focus of the publication is to provide news and insights about members’ businesses, and to showcase innovations, developments and successes in the packaging and processing machinery industry.
MEMBER DINNERS DRAW CROWDS
This year, APPMA has held three well-attended dinners with high-calibre guest speakers delivering thought-provoking presentations and stimulating, interesting dialogue: Paul Allen of Margin Partners spoke in Sydney (see Machinery Matters Sept-Oct 2019); Lindsay Tanner in Melbourne (see facing page); and, most recently, Amy Cobb of OzHarvest in Brisbane.
The Queensland State Manager of one of Australia’s leading food-rescue organisations presented OzHarvest’s story, its initiatives and the challenges faced in rescuing and redistributing more than 100,000 kilograms of food per month that would normally end up as waste.
OzHarvest has grown from humble beginnings operating with one van in Sydney to being an Australia-wide business. I encourage all APPMA members and the wider industry to provide any support they can to enable this brilliant organisation to fulfil its aim of nourishing our country.
ON THE PULSE OF GLOBAL TRENDS
In this issue we publish another extract from the 2019 Global Packaging Trends Report, developed in partnership with our US sister association PMMI and other leading international machinery associations.
The report represents findings from a market research study by Euromonitor International highlighting future packaging demand, product categories, and opportunities for growth in packaging among fast-growing
and maturing world economies including Asia Pacific, China, and Australasia (see page 36). This report explores key trends driving development and innovation in packaging, and seeks to identify hot spots for growth in all regions throughout the world. APPMA .
LEADERSHIP TEAM ELECTED
As mentioned in the last edition of Machinery Matters, the director election results were announced at the AGM on 10 September, with a follow-up announcement at the members’ dinner that same evening – attended by over 35 member companies – where we welcomed Robert Becher, MD of Inox Australia, to the APPMA Board (pictured on facing page), along with Peter Bradbury of ABB and myself being re-elected.
I would again like to thank outgoing director Mark Krygger of Orora Fibre Packaging for his contribution as a Board member since 2011. In addition to the operational Board responsibilities, Mark has played a major role on the AUSPACK working committee, helping to drive its increasing growth and success over the past four exhibitions.
2020 EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES
2020 is shaping up to be a very exciting time for APPMA members, with plans already in place to deliver additional educational and networking events, increase support services, facilitate value-add business and association partnerships, and, of course, firm up AUSPACK 2021 exhibition plans and events – just to name a few.
We’ll keep the industry updated through PKN + APPMA Machinery Matters digital and print channels, so please watch out for announcements early in the new year. I invite any companies in the packaging and processing machinery sector who may be interested in joining the APPMA and enjoying the myriad benefits of membership to contact the APPMA office (e: appma@appma.com.au).
Wishing everyone a safe and happy Christmas break, and I look forward to seeing you in 2020.
MARK DINGLEY, CHAIRMAN
