PRODUCING the final PKN issue of the year is always a rewarding task, and not just because the holiday season is so close the collective tapping of our newsroom keyboards is starting to sound positively jingle-bellish. No, it’s because in wrapping up who made the news for our annual Head- line Makers report (see page 58), we have the chance to reflect on the in- dustry’s year that was.
And what a big year it has been.
On the M&A front, the news is still rolling in as we go to print, with sev- eral stories so fresh they hit the desk after deadline. A case in point is SIG’s acquisition of Visy Cartons for $70 million. The deal is set to close by mid-December, and signals the global aseptic carton specialist’s in- tentions of expanding its footprint in Asia Pacific. And then there’s the announcement that glass giant OI’s
five Australian and New Zealand plants are up for sale, valued at $1 billion. The deal promises to be the biggest local manufacturing transac- tion since Nippon stealthily scooped up the Orora Fibre Packaging busi- ness in October for $1.72 billion. The latter news did land in time, so you can read our in-depth analysis on what this will mean for the local packaging industry on page 10.
While shake-ups at the big end of town can be unsettling, there’s some reassurance to be drawn from the ongoing investment in plant and technology across the playing field, notably in the areas of automation and sustainability. In this issue you’ll read about Coopers Brewery’s journey to automation (page 26); Schütz’s investment in a new IBC manufacturing and reconditioning facility in Yatala (page 24); and Impact International’s success with solar and carbon neutral tube pro- duction (page 44).
With packaging waste and the war on plastic being such a major news focus across all media this year, it’s not surprising the Headline Makers report is full of sustainability news stories. And they continue to roll in. In this issue, shout outs must also go to Wellman Packaging for launching a 100% rPET preform (page 54); Woolworths, for linking up with Ter- racycle’s Loop to bring a circular packaging system to market (page 6); Brownes Dairy for switching to a re- newable Tetra Pak carton (page 6); and Zero Co for its Kickstarter cam- paign that will bring to market a cir- cular packaging ecosystem for home care products (page 8).
While I’m well aware that things are not all rosy out there, that com- panies and industry sectors are doing it tough, I’m choosing to am- plify the good news stories – not only because it’s that time of year when good cheer, like reusable tin- sel, is in vogue. Stories like these show us what’s possible, give us hope. And that’s the best gift PKN can bring to you this festive season.
Wishing you well over the holi- days; may you celebrate in memora- ble and sustainable style.
