Packaging power
Heidelberg is continuing with its major drive into packaging print systems, as it seeks to provide businesses with innovative solutions to grow their markets.

address. “We want to give our cus- tomers lots of different ideas of how they can make their business model even more profitable.”
The Smart Packaging Production agenda item showed how productiv- ity and profitability can be signifi- cantly increased in an integrated overall solution. Networked with the Prinect Production Manager, the Speedmaster XL 106 six-colour press with coating unit and logistics; the new Powermatrix 106 CSB die cutter; and the Diana X 115 folder gluer ran at full speed.
The Powermatrix 106 CSB is the new high-performance die cutter from MK Masterwork. It produces 8000 sheets per hour and has many features expected by packaging printers, such as an elevated pile handling system and the optical MasterSet sheet register system, but as standard equipment. Heidelberg says its performance capability in a 24/7 environment will make the new Powermatrix 106 CSB an economical option for industrial packaging printers looking for an efficient die cutter.
Printing spot colours with three colours, in addition to the basic four process colours, in one pass, was demonstrated both on the Speed- master XL 75 Anicolor, and on the large-format Speedmaster XL 162. The fact that no colour changes are required between the individual jobs greatly reduces washing and makeready times, which translates to higher productivity.
The Primefire 106 industrial inkjet digital printing press demonstrated the personalisation possibilities in Packaging As You Like. This allowed visitors to discover how the latest digital processes can be seamlessly integrated with traditional offset methods – with the same substrates and the familiar finishing processes on existing postpress systems.
One Pass, Infinite Possibilities was popular with those interested in greater profitability through differ- entiation. The Speedmaster XL 106 eight-colour press with double coat- ing unit and the FoilStar cold foil module produced the fascinating finishing effects, which Heidelberg says are guaranteed to attract atten- tion on any market shelf. ■
HEIDELBERG has had a focus on packaging for the past de- cade. The press range from the world’s biggest offset manufacturer includes a full complement of packaging printing oriented presses, and
in addition, Heidelberg is now also the first company to bring B1 digital sheetfed printing to market with its Primefire 106. This new digital solu- tion, with Fujifilm inkjet heads, is now being installed around the world, primarily by packaging printers – some with innovative business models of their own, using the capabilities of digital print.
Heidelberg’s label division Gallus is also powering ahead, with conven- tional, digital and hybrid presses, while the Heidelberg finishing divi- sion is launching major advances in die cutting and folder gluing lines.
This year’s Packaging Days event at the company’s main Wiesloch-Wall- dorf site had the theme Together on Track to Success. Some 350 partici- pants from all over the world visited the Print Media Centre Packaging over two days, where, the company said, they demonstrated strong inter-
est in Heidelberg’s integrated solu- tions, and received comprehensive answers to growing industry needs.
Run lengths are declining, the number of individual jobs is increas- ing, raw materials are going up in price, and margins continue to be under pressure. Heidelberg says it is offering its customers a wide product portfolio for this, with standardised processes and largely automated workflows.
