2018-19 proved a big financial year for the big four publicly-traded packaging companies in Australia, with Amcor, Orora, and Pro-Pac all posting positive results – but Pact Group was the excep- tion, taking a $290 million loss on the back of the drought, weaker demand from the agri and food & beverage sec- tors, and higher raw material and energy costs. The company’s stock dropped 16.9 per cent on the ASX following the re- sults announcement.

ON THE COVER: SMC Corporation celebrated its “Kanreki”: 60 years in business. The company had grown from humble begin- nings in Tokyo, with founder Yoshiyuki Takada manufacturing sintered metal ele- ments for air filters, to a global power- house in automation and pneumatics. PKN visited the company’s Australian head- quarters in Castle Hill, Sydney, to learn from CEO Wayne Driver about SMC’s people-focused culture.
It was a packed house for the second year running at Print21 + PKN LIVE: New Fron- tiers in Packaging Print as industry profes- sionals turned out in droves to hear from some of the leading lights in packaging and printing. Around 180 guests, including packagers, printers, designers and brand owners, came to the ARA Darling Quarter theatre in Sydney’s Darling Harbour to net- work with their peers and learn from thought leaders in the industry.
