 Digital options flowing from Gallus
The renowned Swiss label press developer is applying its Hprinciples to digital label printing, reports Wayne Robinson.

size of just 2pl and up to 200 grey scale values, corresponding to a visual resolution of 2,400 × 2,400dpi.
According to the company the high physical resolution of the inkjet heads offers a real advantage, partic- ularly when it comes to small sym- bols and characters as well as fine lines and gradients down to zero percent. It says what it claims are the smallest droplet size in the printing industry to date results in smooth, satin-finished surfaces, improved ink adhesion and curing and mini- mal ink consumption.
Gallus says the shape of its inkjet print head enables seamless inkjet head stitching, resulting in a smooth print across the entire web. The combination of digital white, CMYK, the colour space enlargement colours of orange, violet and green, as well as seven-colour separation mean the Gallus Labelfire 340 press system can cover a large portion of the Pantone colour space.
If integrated inline, the digital fin- ishing technology of the DEU creates tactile relief effects and matt or gloss spot coatings in various thicknesses digitally. The advantages are shorter set-up times, minimised cleaning and no costs for additional tools. The company has also introduced inkjet low-migration inks for the Digital Printing Unit (DPU) of the Gallus Labelfire, under the Heidelberg Saphira Digital inks brand.
To optimise the capabilities of dig- ital printing Gallus has Your Smoothie, software for variable data capabilities with Labelfire. These include iVDP industrial variable data printing for high volume text work, the regular VDP variable data printing, and the fVDP full variable data printing for each print different to the next at full speed.
Gallus also has its Smartfire entry- level digital label printing press, which the company says is ideal for short runs, adding that this press is a cost-effective, professional solution for anyone who is looking to move into digital label printing for the first time. ■
Heidelberg, said, “Gallus has a raft of innovation on its label printing sys- tems – conventional, hybrid, and digital – as the company builds on its leading position in the market.”
Among recent digital innovations for its conventional presses is its Digital Printbar for digitally printing an opaque white on its conventional flexo presses, and a new Digital Embellishment Unit to apply matte and gloss effects and spot coating
The main Gallus digital print technology is its hybrid digital label press Labelfire, which combines industrial inkjet printing with con- ventional label printing at printing speeds up to 70 m/min. The com- pany says the compact digital pro- duction system combines UV inkjet printing quality and maximum-effi- ciency digital printing, with the inline productivity and speed of
ishing possibilities – flexo printing and cold foil embossing, combined with digital finishing with the Digital Embellishment Unit (DEU).
Gallus says the new Labelfire 340 digital production system enables label printers to achieve levels of print quality that match those of high-resolution offset printing. This is reflected in the native resolution of 1,200 × 1,200dpi with a droplet
