Every year for the last 14 years, Capture has sought out the most amazing new talent in the region. Australasia’s Top Emerging Photographers, presented by Fujifilm, showcases the very best emerging photographic talent across Australia and New Zealand. The awards recognise and acknowledge talented photographers in the early stages of their careers or those simply working towards being the very best photographers they can be.
One of the longest-running and most significant competitions for emerging photographers in the southern hemisphere, it continues to attract a strong following. This year, the Single Shot category was again the most popular, followed by the Landscape category.
HOW THE COMPETITION WORKS
To be a contender for the title of Australasia’s Top Emerging Photographer 2022, photographers with less than four years’ full-time experience working as a professional photographer were invited to submit portfolios across any of the eight categories. Entrants could also submit works into the Single Shot category. Besides those working in the industry, enthusiasts and amateurs with no professional experience were also eligible to enter. After an initial review of entries by the editor of Capture, a shortlist was produced.
The awards always rely on a large judging panel comprising some of the world’s leading photographers and industry experts, and this year we were fortunate to have the biggest panel ever assembled, with a total of 47 who shared their expertise and wisdom across a number of categories to vote for their favourite entries, ranking them in order. To arrive at the overall winner, Australasia’s Top Emerging Photographer 2022, judges were asked to rank their three favourite portfolios from the eight portfolio category winners.
RECOGNITION
Along with winners and runners-up, in this edition we also share top ranked portfolios for each category and the top finalists in the Single
Shot category. Photographers were able to enter the same category with more than one entry and their portfolios and image rankings are based according to how their work was judged. Entrants whose work received a Highly Commended or Commended will be notified by e-mail.
SPONSORS & SUPPORTERS
The continued success of this competition lies with the stunning quality of entries received, the involvement of an amazing panel of judges, and the support of our wonderful sponsors. Much thanks and gratitude to the leading professionals on the judging panel for their time, wisdom, and expertise scrutinising the entries.
Great thanks must also go to our major sponsor, Fujifilm, and all our category sponsors: BenQ, Camera House, EIZO, LaCie, Haida, Hnry, SanDisk, The Brownbill Effect, and WD.
Without their incredible generosity and commitment to supporting emerging photographic talent, competitions like this simply aren’t possible. This year the total prize pool was worth over $30,000, with $21,000 in prizes, plus cash prizes of $9,000. The Emerging Photographer of the Year receives the grand prize – a Fujifilm X-T4 and XF18-135mm lens valued at $4,578, while the overall runner-up receives a Fujifilm X100V valued at $2,349, both from our major sponsor. Category winners receive a mix of cash prizes and prizes from our category sponsors. Category runners-up each receive a $200 voucher from Camera House.
