VALE JOHN HAYNES
JOHN HAYNES, THE ENTREPRENEUR AND CREATOR OF THE HAYNES
Manual, founder of the Haynes Publishing Group PLC and the Haynes International Motor Museum passed away on 8 February, aged 80, af- ter a short illness.
From an early age Haynes had a passion for cars, and as a child he loved nothing more than riding around with his father in their Morris 8 saloon.
Attheageof12hemovedtotheUKtoattendboardingschool.Heper- suaded his house master to allow him to miss rugby and instead spend his time converting an Austin 7 into a lightweight sporty Austin 7 ‘Spe-
cial’. He eventually sold the car, making a reasonable prof- it, and owing to the immense interest it received (over 150 replies to the advert) he decid- ed to produce a booklet show- ing other enthusiasts how he'd made it. He published a book- let entitled “Building A ‘750’ Special’; the first print run of 250 copies sold out in 10 days.
The first Haynes Manual, for the Austin Healey Sprite, was published in 1966, and the first print run of 3,000 sold out in less than three months. To date over 200 mil- lion Haynes Manuals have been sold around the world.
ROBAYNE IN ADMINISTRATION
ROBAYNE, THE
Perth-based equipment and coatings dis- tributor has gone into vol- untary admin- istration which is being han- dled by FTI Consulting.
The company was founded in 1974 and has been rapidly expanding in recent years, espe- cially in rural areas with 14 branches around Australia. While the company is still trading, it is likely it will be sold and expressions of in- terest have been sought by FTI. Robayne is re- ported to owe about $12 million to creditors led by Westpac. The sudden collapse was attributed to a major suppliers' non-renewal of contract.
Robayne turned over an increased $36.4 mil- lion last financial year. After making just under $500,000 for 2016-17, the company recorded a small loss of $19,539 last year according to The West Australian.
