Star struck
THIS may be our last issue for the year, but it's certainly not our least, thanks to our Top 100 Food & Drink Companies report, which we compile at this time every year in collaboration with IBISWorld. The report ranks Australia’s largest food and drink companies according to their most recently reported revenue, and we also draw out some of the big trends:
the fastest movers, the top performing sectors and new arrivals to the list. Check it out on p27.
When it comes to headlines, however, the smaller end of town is certainly holding its own. Food disruptors are the new darlings of the investment community, and we’ve seen a hotbed of activity from deep-pocketed backers including Richard Branson and Bill Gates, as well as from large established food and beverage companies.
In just one example, US meat giant Tyson Foods has invested in vegan burger disruptor Beyond Meat, the US company that this month launched its ‘bleeding’ vegan burgers into the meat sections at Coles and IGA. Read all about in our news pages starting on page 5.
According to Deloitte, the global funding channelled to food and beverage start-ups is hitting a record high, with hundreds of deals taking place
globally last year. In our regular Rising Star section this year we’ve shared many stories from the innovative SME sector, and in this issue we bring them all together in a wrap on p16.
Our final issue for 2018 would not be complete without a look back at the year's biggest stories. You’ll find our Year in Review on page 54.
On behalf of the team here at Food & Drink Business, I’d like to wish you a happy holiday season, and we’ll
be back in 2019 to dish up more
hot trends and cool innovations.
