From the Editor
Welcome to Print21
Finding a niche and becoming a major player there is a key to business success. As I talk to printers around the country, those that have a clear strategy and are following it seem to be the ones who are more optimistic, and are investing for the future.
This issue of Print21 kicks off with an insight into such a niche business, Guru Labels, a dynamic operation located in the sleepy NSW central coast, and with a national reach. Investing in new equipment, with a clear focus, the company is kicking goals as it drives forward.
Print21 is more than the print industry’s leading magazine – and the only one written by people who know print – it is an industry hub committed to bringing print business owners and managers every insight into growth opportunities for their businesses. We have just hosted LIVE New Frontiers in Packaging Print, which brought together printers, brand owners, packaging designers and technologists for
a value-packed day together. You can read a report on the emerging opportunities it highlighted in this issue.
Like all aspects of print, paper – which is around 30 per cent of the cost of a job – has been through disruption in recent times, as mills deal with the implications of falling demand, and merchants realign. In this issue Print21 takes a deep look at the state of the Australian paper business, and what it means for the nation’s printers.
Offset still produces most print, and this issue has a comprehensive report on latest developments from the big five press manufacturers.
The PrintEx coverage extends to 20 pages, and includes the latest technology launches and updates. Print21 is proud to have been able to present the Hot Picks at PrintEx, given to technologies at the show
that brought something new to the table. We were able to give out 21 Hot Picks, testimony to the commitment of industry suppliers to provide the local industry with the best print solutions available.
The highlight of any print year is the National Print Awards. Congratulations to Chapel Press for taking out more golds than anyone else, and to all the gold winners, all shown in this issue.
Packed as usual with engaging, industry-relevant content,
Print21 includes an analysis of what happened at Picton Press, and an insight into the operation installing the first Fujifilm B2 inkjet sheetfed press. Scott Telfer considers print awards from a customer perspective, there is an insight into the upcoming growth of digital from Smithers Pira, and tips from Kurz on foiling. We have comment from the association CEOs, the latest from drupa – which is now firmly on the horizon, and coming soon – and plenty of people in print making a splash in various ways.
Thanks to all the writers in this issue of Print21, it is a pleasure to present it to you. 21
