just going to charge right into talking about keeping your team fe. I I visit a lot of shops during the year either in person or virtually and if someone is wearing the right PPE and working safely it’s an exception rather
than a rule.
It has always puzzled me why no one
talks about lung issues. So many shops still have an unacceptable level of dust and fumes floating around so it stands to reason that occupational lung disease must be an issue. By chance I was talking to someone who had taken part in one of our surveys this year and I realised why. There aren’t any people with diagnosed lung issues in the industry because as soon as they are diagnosed they are told they have to leave and find another profession – if they are able to work at all. This person had to retire from painting. Although he wore PPE he said it didn’t fit properly and he probably hung around outside the paint mixing room without it too much. The doctor told him he had to leave if he wanted to keep on breathing. Don’t laugh, but when I asked him what he was doing now he told me we was a welder and
loving it. The phrase out of the frying pan and into the fire comes to mind.
This year we want to raise awareness around lung safety and have chosen to support The Lung Foundation. We’ll be donating part of the proceeds from our Women in Collision awards lunch on 17 February and be encouraging donations from our readers throughout the year. If you feel like donating straight away then you can simply scan the QR code. It’s not just the technicians in the workshop who are affected by occupational lung disease – those airborne particles and fumes waft into the admin areas too.
With such a skills shortage at themoment we certainly can’t afford to lose talent to
preventable causes
and we certainly don’t want to lose any of our valued readers. So I’ll shout it out at the top of my lungs – stay safe people!
